I have a 2000 GTP that died while going down the road. now it will only start then die. replaced the mass sensor and the idle air sensor and it is getting gas????
no check engine lights, runs perfect for a couple sec then dies. smells fine?no check engine lights, runs perfect for a couple sec then dies. smells fine?
at the time it happened i was using passing gear to pass a car, got around it slowed down went to accelerate again and the car was dead.at the time it happened i was using passing gear to pass a car, got around it slowed down went to accelerate again and the car was dead.
Is it getting enough gas though? Check the pressure while you are starting it and running it. It might not be able to maintain pressure. Now if it is getting gas because you can smell it out the exhaust then you have an ignition problem. Any check engine lights? Is it getting enough gas though? Hi Elmer, I'm glad to help! Elmer there are a lot of things that can cause a dieing problem. FIRST, see if it will stay running if you push the gas pedal a little bit then crank it. If it runs and stays running but dies when you release the pedal then here are a few things you can check. (1) You may have an "IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR" sticking and is stuck in the closed position. SOMETIMES this works, take sometime and tap on the motor and if it starts idling properly replace the motor. (2) You could possibly have a "THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR" that bad and does not signal the engine controller that the engine is at idle so it dies. If you can get it to idle then tap on the TPS when its bad it will idle the engine way up while tapping on it. If it does then replace the TPS. (3) You could also have a FAULTY or DIRTY "MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR" If the vehicle has one, some do some don't. If your vehicle is equipped with one, you can take it off and try cleaning the air flow sensor inside it. If it idles properly your good to go. If it doesn't idle properly I wouldn't rule out the sensor being bad. (4) You could possibly have a vacuum leak, vacuum leaks cause all kinds of crazy problems because it confuses the engine controller. If you can get it to idle, then you can take parts cleaner and spray around the intake manifold and if it dies right away then you have a vacuum leak that needs to be repaired. (5) You could have fuel issues, BUT, if the engine runs good while driving it down the road then you can rule this one out. These are the most common problems that occur and cause dieing problems. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Elmer.
It could be the mass air flow or manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) ; usually has just one or the other. The idle air control valve can also cause this. Sometimes the O2 (oxygen) sensors can cause this as well. If it runs fine going down the road then I would check the Idle Air Control Valve first.
this vehicle most likely has a mass air flow sensor it may have got accidently unplugged or the air tube from mass airflow to engine is not connected well or it could be that you have indeed a bad mass air flow sensor they do make a special cleaner that you may want to try before purchasing a mass air flow sensor or purchasing one from salvage yard the symptoms you describe would be created by a bad massair flowsensor
I had to replace the mass air flow sensor. $ 150. the engine would shut off when driving too.changed fuel filter only worked for a day. The sensor is just after air filter.
try replacing the air mass flow sensor. just disconnect the harness that goes to it; start the car it should idle high and not die. and if it doesn't your AMF sensor is bad
If you have a GTP these engines use a hi output fuel pump. they use a fuel pump resistor located under the battery tray (look up from under the car) This resistor lowers the voltage to the fuel fump when not in boost mode. because of its locatoin it is prone to corrosion. if you bypass the wires and the engine starts and stays running replace the resistor

Would a bad crank sensor or cam sensor make the check engine light come on?
Is it getting enough gas though? Check the pressure while you are starting it and running it. It might not be able to maintain pressure. Now if it is getting gas because you can smell it out the exhaust then you have an ignition problem. Any check engine lights?
