Im not 100% but i think that truck has a hydraulic clutch. if it does for sure then check the fluid level if its a cable or linkage type then it may be out of adjustment. Ether way (low on fluid or out of adjustment) the clutch may not be fully disengaged while your trying to shift. Start there before getting to far into it.

2004 Dodge Dakota. It down shifts hard and now it won't shift out of 2nd gear and I have code P0734 and the fluid level is good. Where is the solenoid located?

Question edited for clarity and spelling 'solenoid'.
Question moved to model category.

It may not be the solenoid, it is a speed sensor error related to 4th gear.

The P0734 code stands for "Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio." It's logged when the PCM detects that the RPM of your input speed sensor doesn't match the expected RPM in 4th gear.

have the trans checked out, sounds like it might be in 2 gears when your shifting into 2nd, causing it to bind up, is there any noise when this problem occurs? a bad bearing or worn syncro rings could be the cause

Bad speed sensor- symptoms

Transmission may not shift at the right speeds or has a hard time shifting into gear. Sometimes the needle may jump or **** at cruising speed or may not work at all. May cause the service engine light to come on. Can also affect the fuel usage because the shifting points are affected.

Automatic transmission problem

It would appear that your shift cable is worn or corroded. You may try lubricating the linkage at the transmission end but in the long run, you'll have to get the cable replaced. Thanks, Dana

95 dodge dakota having hard time shifting.

Try a tranny service change a place that changes the filter the pan gasket and fluid not some of these quick places that just drain a couple quarts out of the tranny lines and thats it that wont help but a complete tranny service should help.

Unfortunately any problem it could be will have the same fix. You will end up needing the trans replaced or rebuilt.
