Estima missing and overheating

I have a 1996 Estima 2.4 When it starts it is "missing"/running on 3 cylinders? then seems to come right but can be gutless at times and is getting hot. I have had the radiator flushed, thermostat replaced and head gasket checked. When it gets hot if I accelerate and put the heater on the temperature goes back to normal. Also strangly enough the hand brake light has not worked for about 3 years thought the bulb was blown and suddenly it has started coming on when I stop while driving but not when the hand brake is applied

Hi!

I think you missed checking a couple of things more.

1.- Water Pump
2.- Temp. Sensor
3.- Radiator Fan
4.- Timing
5.- Spark Plugs
6.- Spark Plug Wires
7.- Vacumm Leaks
8.- Fuel system (Pump pressure, injectors, leaks)
9.- Electrical System
10.- Check for even compression on all cilinders.

I hope this help you find your problem
Good Luck.

My 1996 Hyundai is only running on 3 cylinders how do I find out which cylinderits missing on?

I am curious, how do you know it's missing?

One way (safest way) is with a temperature read
er: with the engine running, aim the reader at each exhaust port. The missing cylinder will be colder than the others.

Another old-school way: (electrical shock hazard) with the engine running, pull the plug wire of each cylinder, either at the plug end or the other end, one at a time. The missing cylinder will be revealed when there is no change in the engine's sound.

Backfiring and missing

possible couple of things
low battery voltage by the system not charging enough
overheating component in the ignition system--coil failing when hot
engine overheating- no air flow around head and cylinder fins from dirt and rubbish

I hope i am wrong, but being #2 and #3 contiguous cylinders, there is a possibility that the head gasket has blown right between them. The way to find out, is by running a compression check on all cylinders, which will also tell you a comprehensive story on the health and condition of the engine.

Miss fires when it's cold and when it get's hot. seems to be after the crank sensor was changed. I changed the coil, distributer, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump, fuel filtre, checked the grounds, had it on the...

Your right to replace the sensor again. It's like a bulb, some bulbs working 20 years, some only 3 minutes. Make sure to install the new one in the right way and that is no mud, old oil or so on the rotor that supports the sensor. Keep all parts clean. if that doesn't solf the problem, please come back again.
