How are the cylinders numbered on a 2001 S 4.0?

Should be 1, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 cylinders are numbered down the right side of the engine (standing in front of the engine) 1, 3, 5 while the cylinders are numbered on the left side as 2, 4, 6.

The firing order is 1 6 5 4 3 2

The driver side bank from front to back, cylinders numbered, 1 3 5.
Passenger side bank from front to back, cylinders numbered, 2 4 6.

the cylinder numbers are confusing early engines are rh bank (lh as you look from front) 1357, lh bank 2468, later engines rh bank 1234 lh bank 5678 at your year it could be either way round.

The number 2 cylinder is in front of the car on the passenger side closest to the oil cap. The cylinders on the firewall side are the odd number, front of the car even number starting from the passenger side to drivers. Rear are 1,3,5 and front cylinders are 2,4,6. Number 1 cylinder is usually the cylinder closest to the timing belt/chain. The typical firing order in a 4-cylinder engine is: 1-3-4-2.

Hello. Here is the order of things for your truck. The engine firing order for either 4.6L or 5.4L V8 is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Cylinders are numbered, 1-2-3-4 on the passenger side bank of cylinders beginning at the front of the engine. Cylinders are numbered, 5-6-7-8 on the driver side bank again, beginning from the front of the engine to the back.
Soooooooo the number 6 is the second one from the front of the engine on the drivers side.

Jaguar runs there cylinder numbering different then the north american engines. They go from 1-2-3-4- front to back and bank 1 and bank 2. Bank one is on the passenger side and bank 2 is on the drivers side. This is the s type DOHC V8 (AJ28) engine for your car.
