Fab only gave part of an answer. Check the vacuum lines on the driverside firewall. Also check your heater/AC unit make sure the air deflector will change from defrost to vent. If it stays on defrost no matter where you put the knob then you have a disconnected or leaking vacuum line to the dash. If that works and you don't see any open hoses then remove the battery and battery tray. You'll find the actuator there. Remove the vaccum line that goes to it, connect the battery or jumper cables so that you can start the engine. Put it in 4HI and feel for a vacuum at the line. If you do then put it on the actuator and see if it pulls on the cable. If there is no vacuum at that line then the switch at the transfer is bad and isn't sending vacuum to the actuator. If you do have vacuum and the cable didn't pull then change the actuator.

Great answer jcpc83!! I have a question though one step from this. I changed my actuator having the same symptoms and it is pulling the cable. I hear the transmission switch in especially in 4low, but the wheels are not spinning or pulling in the front. One of my friends had a cotter pin come out in side of the front differential of his truck.. might have been a Dodge. I have a 1997 Chevy Blazer. I do not have any other vacuum leaks at the firewall and it appears with the new actuator that it is functioning properly. I will add that even with the new actuator my AC will stop blowing out through the vents when climbing a hill and blow out through the defrost. I though replacing the actuator would also cure that problem, but it has not. Any ideas where to look next? Thanks so much!!

  • guitarbilly Dec 22, 2010

Well.. I found it.. It had a small leak in one of the vacuum lines right at the transmission. It had fallen due to not being routed properly after some recent transmission work and burnt a small hole in the line. 4X4 is fully functional, but the AC still cuts out when climbing a hill and blows through the defrost vents.

Is there an electric or vacuum switch on a 2001 chevy blazer

There are 2 models here the push button will flash if the system is not engaging or disengaging properly . If front drive shaft is turning. That is with car raised and supported . if front drive axles do not turn then the axle actuator is not engaging axle shaft passenger side. Remove actuator and manually engage shifting collar with a screwdriver still does not turn then inner axle is twisted.

Make sure that the vacuum hose connector is connected AND connected correctly at the transfer case and at the front differential. If that is all right and the front differential still doesn't engage, then you need to test the vacuum actuator at the front differential.

2000 chevy blazer passenger front wheel noise

driving in 4wd on hard surfaces produces what is known as torque wind up as the wheels cannot slip so the variations of distance going around corners , dips in the road etc place considerable strain on the transmission , transfer case , drive lines and diffs
that is why it is difficult to get out of 4wd unless you drive with 2 wheels on a grass verge to relieve that torque wind up
as for the noise check wheel bearings and the cv ("U") joint at that wheel as there appears a proble where the dog teeth in the hub are not engaging properly or are jumping out of engagement

The NVG 233 transfer case features a 3 button shift control switch, located on the instrument panel.
The NVG 236 transfer case features a 4 button shift control switch located on the instrument panel.
Do you know what DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes are ? Both of these 4X4 systems can set DTC'S , Having a professional or factory scanner is what is needed to check for these codes . Not a OBD 2 code reader or autozone , advance etc... The four button system can set a bunch of them .

The NVG 233 transfer case features a 3 button shift control switch, located on the instrument panel. When the ignition is in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module starts monitoring the transfer case shift control switch, to determine if a new mode/gear position has been selected. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new position begins flashing to inform the driver that the transfer case shift control module has received the request for a new mode/gear position. The lamp continues to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been reached, or has engaged. Once the new mode/gear position is fully active, the switch indicator lamp for the new position remains ON constantly.
The NVG 233 transfer case provides the driver with 3 manual mode/gear positions:
• 2HI - 2 Wheel Drive high range
• 4HI - 4 Wheel Drive high range
• 4LO - 4 Wheel Drive low range
Any of these mode/gear positions may be selected while driving the vehicle. However, the transfer case will not allow a shift into, or out of, 4LO unless the following criteria has been met:
• The engine is running.
• The automatic transmission is in Neutral, or the clutch pedal is applied on manual transmissions.
• The vehicle speed is below 5 km/h (3 mph).

Finding out what if any codes are stored should be your first step .

Every time i push the button for the four wheel hi it makes the click noise in the front but DOES NOT ENGAGE. only the back tire spins

Depending on the year, it is not posted, it may be a bad transfer case motor. The clicking you are hearing is the motor trying to engage transfer case & front axle. It looks like a windshield wiper motor & when it gets power & works properly it engages front wheels. Again, depending on the year, may be 4 wheel drive actuator or switches bad on front axle or transfer case.

1997 Chevy Blazer 4wd

I have the same problem with mine, I also had the same problem with a ford explorer, they told me it was the transfer case which has to do with the hubs. it jumps into 4 wheel drive then when you hit 2 wheel it stops.. Always had a problem with this in both of my SUV's.

2000 blazer 4 wheel drive problem

It's most likely the "four wheel drive actuator" This is located on the front differential housing. It's cylindrical shaped and has a large hex (about
1-1/4") and two wires coming out of it. Usually they short out and blow the fuse but, I've also seen where they just quit working and sometimes they just get slow to work. The "actuator" has a heating element in it and it warms up, some sort gas, causing it to expand thus engaging the front wheels. In cold weather it may take a minute or so for it to engage, so put in four wheel drive and wait for a bit and see what happens.

Four wheel drive lights come on but no four wheel drive

The light comes on indicating that the transfer case is engaged in 4wd, but that doesn't mean the hubs are locked. If you have automatic locking hubs, you should check to make sure they are working correctly. This GM vehicle may be equipped with vacuum locking hubs... meaning there is a vacuum line running from the transfer case selector to the hubs on each side. The vacuum makes the hubs lock into place. If those vacuum lines are damaged or missing, they wont lock. If you have electronic locking hubs, they may need to be replaced. Good luck.
