If you are not very mechanical i would recommend you take your car to a garage and ask them to change your transmission oil and filter, the sooner the better.
or get the filter and the grade of oil you need, drain the transmission fluid, either by undoing the transmission sump bolt located under the car engine, located on opposing side to the oil sump, or removing the sump(replace filter). replace and reseal the sump/bolt. refill car from through the transmission dipstick, located near the engine under the bonnet.

P 0733 code what does that mean

You could be more specific with the issue:
  • Transmission type (Manual/Automatic)?
  • How did this issue appear?
  • Does the car change gears normally?
Your car seems to be an automatic transmission model?
So the fault code is "Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio"

This means that you may have:
  • Low transmission fluid level or dirty transmission fluid
  • Faulty or dirty shift solenoids
  • Transmission mechanical problems
  • Transmission hydraulic control circuit issue

Has there ever been a recall on 2002 s60 volvo for turbo or transmission problems?

No. As with any vehicle, maintain clean transmission fluid, and the car will serve you well. However, the 2002 S80 does have a high frequency of instrument cluster failure.

2001 VOLVO S80 T6. Failed sensor caused transmission destruction.

They are solenoids that go bad. If you replace one, replace all four solenoids. The kit costs about $100 on ebay. It is a difficult job gaining access to the inside of transmission. Pay someone that knows how it's done.

Transmission valve

All I know is that volvo does not replace shift solenoids anymore. I dont even think you can find that part. I used to work for volvo and the manufacturer would have us just replace the transmission. You can get a factory instruction manual from volvo. Its called a first edition manual. They are not cheap. It might be a good idea to bring to the dealer, just find get a second opinion.

Does the 2002 Volvo S80 have history of issues/problems with transmission after it is rebuilt/replaced, or is it generally a good investment? Volvo dealer says transmission must be replaced ($5700), that...

listen to volvo the one you may get aftermarket might cost you more in the end than just getting the volvo one they are simple but very picky cars they dont respond well to aftermarket parts

Volvo s80 water in transmission

It is not unheard of for the transmission cooler to fail in such a manner that you end up with coolant in your transmission, and transmission fluid in your radiator.

If this just happened recently you can usually just replace the radiator and flush the transmission as you said and be fine.

However water/coolant is extremely harmful to the automatic transmission, it can cause the internal clutches to break down inside it and fail.

If it were my vehicle I would take my chances and get a new radiator installed and flush both the cooling system and the transmission, this will more than likely cure your problem.
