My 2010 VW Passat Sedan Trailer wiring

If you have had a trailer hitch and associated wiring installed it could be a fault with the trailer hitch wiring.

possible that the trailer plug is not wire correctly

it is also possible that the trailer has bulbs and the kia uses led units which will throw out the electronics
you may have to talk with an accredited auto electrician as there may need be an adaptor or blub change in the trailer electrics

Hi Karen, if you have a trailer hitch check the associated wiring at the hitch.It is common for this wiring to get damaged,also check the trailer wiring.

so then if you unplug the switch on brake pedal the brake lights stay on if so check operation of the hazzards and turn signals could be a short in the turn signal switch or flasher unit also check for pinched wires around third brake light and tail light wireing does your car have trailer hitch ? if so check the trailer plug wireing

You should not have to rewire anything.
Hitch wires are just "pig-tailed" on to the original vehicle wiring. Just cut off the hitch wires cleanly and tape the cut end.
You have probably burned out the stop and tail lamp fuses also. Read you owner manual for fuse location.

Check your fuses. I'm betting if you have no tail lights, you have no dashlights either and that's a fuse. Also if you have trailer hitch & wiring, make sure trailer wiring isn't shorted or corroded

do you have a trailer hitch wiring? I had the same problem and found that I had a chaffed wire on the trailer hitch wiring.

is the trailer attached to the ball on the van?? could be a ground problem,,run a jumper from hitch to trailer see if that works,,

I've got them for Six and Four wire plugs

Six wire plugs:

Horse, stock or utility trailers:
White = Ground - GD
Yellow = Left turn/Brake -LT
Green = Right turn Brake -RT
Brown = Tail and clearance lights - TM
Red or Black (not both) = Battery, aux power - A
Blue = Electric Brakes - S

Recreational Vehicle: (color, use, plug mark)
White = Ground - GD
Yellow = Not used -
Brown = Right turn Brake - RT
Green = Tail and clearance lights -TM
Black = Battery, aux power - A
Red = Left turn/Brake - LT
Blue = Electric Brakes - S


Four wire plugs:
White = Ground
Yellow = Left turn/Brake
Green = Right turn Brake
Brown = Tail and clearance lights


Ground should be 10ga.
Others 14 ga

tail lights and brake lights, if u had factory wiring then it will be marked trailer tow fuse.
