Since exhaust manifold covers engine block, I have
1998 Chevy Malibu 2.4 liter 4 cyl....Since exhaust manifold covers engine block, I have an oil leak, and want to know if any sending units could be bad (Leaking Oil) .

Buy some engine oil dye at any auto parts store
a uv lamp will be needed to use to locate the leak

Tighten in four steps (refer to illustration in Cylinder Head Installation for tightening sequence):
Tighten in sequence to 70-90 Nm (52-66 Lb-Ft)
Then back off all bolts 360 degrees
Tighten in sequence to 45-55 Nm (34-40 Lb-Ft)
Tighten in sequence to 85-99 Nm (63-73 Lb-Ft)
Tighten in two steps
20-30 Nm (15-22 Lb-Ft)
26-32 Nm (20-23 Lb-Ft)
Advance 3/4 to 1 turn after gasket contacts sealing surface or tighten to 13-15 Nm (10-11 Lb-Ft).
Tighten in two steps:
7-15 Nm (6-11 Lb-Ft)
26-38 Nm (20-28 Lb-Ft)

Yes you have an oil pressure sending unit (switch) located under the manifold. They are known for going bad and leaking. Eventually it will prevent truck from running. When it stops sensing oil pressure due to the leak the vehicles fuel system will shut off. Its a saftey featur to keep you from blowing the motoe if a pump goes bad or you run outta oil
It is located at the rear of the engine between the timing cover and exhaust manifold. You will have to remove the manifold to ge to pump. It runs off the timing chain. It would be a wise decision to take to an experienced mechanic.
Check carefully around the valve covers, this is the area that leaks most frequently occur, and being located next to the exhaust manifold can easily cause the burning smell. There is a very easy to replace gasket under the cover. Other possibilities, shop or you when changed or added oil spilled a bit and that has worked down to the exhaust manifold and is causing the burnt oil smell. Last possibility is that you do have a slow leak on the underside of the engine that is blowing back onto the exhaust system causing the smell.
First check your PCV system and make sure it is in good working order this is a must. Then check the cam sensor or oil sending unit, it is located between the engine and fire wall under the exhaust manifold.
First of all, which engine does your cavalier have? Some GM engines around that time had problems with the intake manifold gasket leaking oil where the manifold bolted to the top of the engine block, but if I remember correctly, it was in the 3.1 liter V-6 engines. If your car has a 4 cylinder engine, I am not aware of any inherent oil leak problems. BTW, if your oil light has been on for 2 weeks, without your adding any oil, you probably have more serious problems than just an oil leak by now. Maybe not a solution, but it's a place to start.
