Test both fand by hooking them up to a car battery first (watch your fingers) but its more likley to be the thermal switch not switching the fans on its an easy part to swop over it just scews in to the engine block with a whire plug fitted to it that is a push fit, you cant get it wrong,

My 2004 3400 closed system ,runs hot in town unless heater is on. driving up a mountain pass it gets very hot.on a flat highway runs normal. new t state, resivior cap, both fans work no leaks or smell

Radiator fan motor or radiator fan thermostat defective/

Also there is a relay that operates the fan motor

In town not enough air passing through radiator allowing it to over temp.. With heater fan running acts like cooling fan keeping engine cool

Highway driving ample air passing through radiator without fan.

Hill climbing requires cooling fan/

Hope this helps?

Water level is ok but light comes on 2002 impala

Friend,
If it is the temperature light ( not the check engine light) you may wish to check and see if the engine is actually hot.
(Be advisesd. An overheated engine is really serious! )
With the engine not running and cold, and the car level, take off the radiator cap very slowly to relieve the pressure, be certain the radiator is full, and then start the car.
Stand back in case the radiator blows antifreeze out.
Now start he car, and with the engine running, and when the temperature light is on, very carefully feel or smell the radiator and top radiator hose. If these are not hot, you problem may be a stuck thermostat. If the thermostat is stuck, you should sense the heat by smelling and listening to the motor.
If you have an overheating issue, please refrain from driving the car until it is fixed, or you could totally destroy the motor.
Also, there are 2 electric blower fans behind your radiator. One is for engine temperature, one is for the air conditioning circuit.
If the temperature light comes on, one of the blower fans should be running. If neither is, that may be your problem.
Be sure to leave your heater/air conditioner off during this test.
The most common problem is a bad temperature sensor for the fan, then a bad fan itself. After that, a stuck thermostat.
Blessings on your figuring this out.

93 GMC Safari overheating. This happened spontaneously. Runs hot very quickly when I drive it. There is antifreeze in both radiator and overflow res, overflow res fills up more after driving a bit. ...

It would appear your thermostat is stuck in the closed position , find where it is on your engine, drain coolant and remove thermostat housing and stat, replace housing(liquid gasket OK) and coolant. now run engine, turn heater controls to hot leaving filler cap off, top up any water to max and replace cap now warm up to temp until fan comes on. if all ok replace thermostat with a new one and new gasket, you could also flush the sytem out at the same time with a hose pipe by loosening one of coolent pipes and flush radiator.

If you radiator is full ,as in you have no leaks, it is most likely going to be a water pump issue. Unless you have a serious clog in the system, but chances are its the water pump, not an uncommon thing to go wrong

Engine runs hot when heater is on

check your coolant temperature. put all your knobs into full (blower, heater). and see if the temperature rises higher than the normal temperature of your vehicle.
if this happens, you have overheating problem. something wrong with your radiator.
your Fan must on and open up your hood to see if it is working while your vehicles engine running with the heater and blower on fully.
if not turning, then you have problem with your sensor (temperature sender sensor) attached to the fan wires to the radiator.
if you have engine leaking, sometimes an oil build- up around the engine cause hot temp and burning smell.

My 2001 mazda millenia ran hot, we put water in it and it still ran hot does it sound like the thermostat?

If your car ran hot, you may need to check the radiator for a leak. You always need to add antifreeze/coolant when you add water to your car. Check you owner's manual for the type they suggest and the proper mix of water to antifreeze/coolant. I had to get a head on my motor shaved when my car ran hot and later I had to get the hoses replaced. My radiator cap died following my replacing the radiator as it was plastic and when the car overheated it damaged the cap. How long was the car running hot? You don't want to be a penny wize or a pound foolish when it comes to engine overheating problems. You can repair on the cheap now and pay a lot more in the long run. Also, in the future when your car runs hot, you can turn on the heater --yes even when it is hot outside--I recommend opening up the windows. The heater fan will help to dissipate the heat from the car engine. It does work. I hope these help. Also go to a reputable repair shop. It could be your thermostat they can have check valves which get messed up but you need to check to see if it is your radiator or if there is a leak there or in a hose.

Car overheating

First you need to find out where the leak or area the coolant is coming from. It may just be running out of coolant and over heating. If the fans aren't on when the car is running it could be the overheating issue and the coolant is purging out of the overflow.
