If you believe its the pump then while the vehicle is running put a stetscope to it and listen for it to buzz. if still not sure remove the belt (after checking it for wear) and grab the pump's pulley and see if there is any play in it. If so replace the pump. usually under the pump you will find its weep hole. if there is a puddeling of coolant comming out of this hole the pump is defective. Keep me posted

Overheating
Vehicle will over heat you could hear metal 2 metal noise or it could leak at the shank if it is overheating some times but go's back downtry the thermostat first
The symptoms would be the car overheating and not cooling down, Also in some cases the water pump will leak. With a overheating problem its always a good idea to check the thermostat before jumping to water pump. Hope this helped =)
