The belt diagram for a '97 Pontiac Sunfire can usually be found on a sticker displayed inside the hood lid, if yours is missing or defaced, get back to me.
Good luck

I would suspect a head gasket or head problem.. the catalytic converter being plugged causes heat build up in the engine and overheating in the engine can cause failure of the head hasket or head itself. The reason your cylinders are misfiring could be water leaking from a water port in the head and into the cylinder which would cause the cylinder not to fire..there might be some steamy vapor coming coming out of the exhaust if that is happening
what would you like to know ? if it is getting in to the oil or smoking and going low on antifreeze, don't drive it you could do a lot more damage,.Hope this helped, Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance,if this was helpful ,leave some detail, Thank You.
Hello. In 1997 the Sunfire used 2 different engines. A 2.4 overhead cam or a 2.2 overhead valve engine. Both use a timing chain setup. Hope this helps you along. Best of the season to you.
First you need to drain down the coolant, secound take top of fan shrould off 2#10 bolts on each side, third loosen fan bolts, fourth take belt off, fifth take fan off, sixth unbolt anything that is bolted to water pump like power steering pump, maybe ac. pump heater hoses ect. last take 4 bolts out that hold water pump to block 2 on each side and thats it. Clean old gasgets off engine block and bolt on new pump with new gasgets witch will come with new pump. Put back to gether in reverse order.
If your timing is off you will have no power.check and make sure all timing mark's are correct. Some engine's are contact motor's,which mean's if your timing is off you could cause damage to valve's or piston's.Also you should do a compression test to be sure each cylinder has adequite pressure.Hope this help's.
