Gears wont engage on my smart car.

sounds like a bad key and needs to be replaced. you cannot take it out of park unitl the key is rotated.

what you are describing can't be done-unless-no -the rear drive shaft will still drive the rear wheels-smart track ain't so smart. you could drop the rear drive shaft out but then you'd leak trany fluid all out the tailshaft-why not pick up rear end at the junkyard and install-cheers Denny

probably similar system to fords smart lock. they have a module located under the dash on the left of the steering wheel. a common fix for them is to hit the dash in that spot & it will always go. Just call an auto elec & ask if it has something like the smart lock module, if that is the probable cause, then how much to diagnose & repair.

it sounds like the main linkage is bent under the car, being as 1st would be forward and reverse back it is most likely the same linkage doing both jobs and doing both faults. easy reaopir though cost about £100 tops. if the problem is more serious then it could be a new gearbox you need although I would be tempted to say I never had to do that job on this car but I have seen many bent gear linkages.

Hi there I just had a similar thing happen to me drove up the motorway and just as I came off at WSM I couldn't find any gear. The dredid 3 lines came up on the dash and a grinding noise from the back. I had to get the rescue service to take me back down to cornwall and dropped it at the garage. Just got it back the garage said they could not find the problem but they flushed the oil and fluids and bobs your uncle. Only time will tell if its ok but they did say sometimes the gears can stick and it just needs cleaning through. Is this true I don't know but all seems good now just makes me wonder it can happen again. It's got full service and was serviced last 2 months ago 53 passion. I did hear and read its common for the selector to go but I don't know anyone else with a smart car to ask. Anyway that's my woes I hope this anyone in a similar situation.
