06 Silverado tailgate stuck closed

The rod end on the left hand side has fell off down inside the tailgate.
This is not behind the handle but attached to the other end near taillight. I need to open the tailgate to repair, but i cannot get it opened. Help.

Cy Schousobe's solution mentions "pushing the catch back into the tailgate" which is true of older trucks. On my 2002, the catch locks around a post when the gate is closed. I can't get the catch to release by applying pressure with a screwdriver. Any ideas on this type of latch?

You should be able to get in between the fender and tailgate with a long screwdriver or piece of flat metal and push the catch back into the tailgate. Then pull the handle to release the other side and the gate should open. Hope this helps.

You can try taking the handle out and fishing the rods up to the opening. Other than that, its a tough job.

The rod right hand side of tailgate is not attached

You should be able to feel around and locate that rod. After you get it you can use some pliers or vice grips to put on the rod to release the lock on that side and the handle on the other side.
As long as the locks and the rods move freely and are in good shape then all you will need is a new handle asm. It will come with new clips and on the other side of the tail-gate are 3 torque-head screws that will need to be removed to replace that handle.

Tailgate doesn't shut. I used to have to slam the tailgate real hard for it to lock, now it doesn't close at all

check the tailgate lock rods behind the handle. The bezel around the handle pops off, and the mechanism is behind there. The rods that go to each side of the tailgate may be stuck inward. A little wd-40 or lubricant should work them loose again

2007 silverado tailgate stuck closed r bar no longer connected to handle...help

EACH rod has a plastic clip that holds rod to tailgate handle you probably just need to replace the clip. it is a plastic clip that locks on rod insert new one in handle then install rod and snap clip down. to gain access you will have to remove tailgate bezel and these usually break when removing.

Tailgate latch on my 2002 silverado is stuck in closed postion

Remove the molding ring from around the handle. Becareful not to break the taps that lock it in. After removing the molding you should see the handle mechanism. There is a rod coming in from each side (each one runs out the the actual latch). Make sure each rod is connected into the handle assembly. If it is not put the rod into the hole and find the retainer clip to keep it in place.

The tailgate latch on our 2006 Chevy truck is in the open positio

there are little metal rods that connect to the handle of the tailgate, just like the rods that connect your door handles to the door hinges and lock mechanism. just pop off the plastic cover over the tailgate handle and check and see if the rods are still connected to the handle.

Tailgate is stuck and will not open

Very common problem. Usually the rods get bent form pulling ******* the handle to open it. If you look behing the handle you will see the two rods running towards the left and right side of the tailgate. If you can use a pliers and squeeze the towards each other you can open it. When you get it open, use some penetrating oil on the latches on the right and left side. Usually just have some dirt in them and they stick.
