When you say no one knows what it is, do you mean no competent shop tech or one of your friends? Do you feel anything when you hear the noise or does everything feel fine? There are several possibilities including a binding axle joint, driveshaft joint, driveshaft slip joint (front) or a bad transmission, differential or transfer case. If the noise is that obvious, any competent shop should not have a problem finding it but they need to look at virtually every driveline part and suspension part for signs of wear, looseness etc. With strange noises, everything is suspect 'till it is proven to be good. When you say no one knows what it is, do you mean no competent shop tech or one of your friends? Don't know if this will help but its how i fixed my 2001. Go to: http://www.2carpros.com/forum/2001-jeep-grand-cherokee-laredo-brake-lights-not-working-vt4814.htmlTip: If you have a small piece of medal to put under the ground contact point then it will keep it raised in place, i used a really big staple from a staple gun to slide under mine I also replaced all the sockets that the bulbs go into cause mine were falling apart and may have been a part of the problem.

i know this post is old but 1996 and newer is obd2 and is under the dash but 1993-1995 is obd1 and is under the hood on passenger side hooked to part of the wiring harnes by the computer.
interdynamics makes a neat little setup for r134 install. It's a trigger release can top with a hose that fits right on the system. it has a "dummy proof" gauge on it that tells you how much is in there till its at the right level. I have a full set of gauges and use the easy can more than the gauges! (I double checked several times and the can thing does read correctly) There should be a charge label on the compressor or on the radiator cowl.
