2003 S-Type Jag. 4.2L - 6sp Auto Trans. Any highway speed, (70mph for test) Transmission seems to vibrate/growl like driving on rough pavement. Seems to cycle, not constant, and the speed seems to "pulse". Noticable under load (upgrade) . Does not happen if cruise control is selected or if gear lever is switched to 5th. Any ideas? 125,000 miles. DOM 3/02.
Thank you - Rick

SOLUTION for x-type Transmission fault error
I had this very same problem. My 02 x-type would get transmission fault code and then shut down into limp mode. If I turned the key off, shifted gears a few times and waited I could start up again and sometimes drive for several miles before the code came back. GOOD NEWS, I thought maybe the vechicle was overheating the tranny or something like that and then after it cooled down I could drive some more. I discovered that my gas station had switched to the 10% ethanol addative about the same time I started experiencing "strange" mechanical issues. I decided to try switching my gas to the non-ethanol gas from a Phillips 66 station that advertised 100% REAL GAS. The problems mysteriously dissappeared!!!! Remember that you MUST use PREIUM gas as per the MFR. Well the 02 3.0 can't handle the 10%ethenol in it's gas. Something else you can try if you can't find REAL GAS is to use the OCTANE boost from your local auto parts store. Pay close attention to which brand you buy since some can harm your fule system. As a side note; I also own an 04 s-type with a 3.0 under the hood. It looks different from my 3.0 and has no problem running on the ethenol added gasoline. However after the horrible mechanical experience I had with the ethenol in the x-type, I now use 100% real gas in both. I have been transmission fault free for 5 months now.

I had the same problem and found that the PCV breather hose was leaking, creating the vacuum leak. The codes for the error have translated to "bank 1 too lean, and bank 2 too lean." Start with the PCV breather hose and see if that doesn't fix it. You will also have to reset the computer afterwards to get rid of the error.

There is a tech bulliten for ecu reprogramme that Jaguar use regarding the hesitation. Black smoke is normally due to a clogged up egr valve. Can be cleaned out easily

Check your brake fluid level first. If it is fine then you probably have a bad abs brake sensor.
SOURCE: 1999 jag xj8 ... where is ABS control module/pump
u have to change the wheelbearing the sensor in there u can have it scaned to find out what wheelbearing it is.goodluck

I found out my own answer --- Took the Car to Jaguar to have them analyze and found that the Torque converter is bad. Something about a "lining breaking down. Cost at Jaguar to repair? $ 3,300.00 including a new torque converter and a complete re-fill of that famously expensive transmission fluid.!!
