P-reg 96 escort, my battery is dead after only a few hours however when the car is running (after jump starting it) the immobilisor light comes on for about a minute, then starts to flash every 3 seconds. Then a few hours later the battery is dead again. any ideas? Thanks Jon

    Hi

Yeah the battery has recently been replaced however the problem still occurs.

I drove the car home from work, approx 6 miles, and enough charge was put into the battery to start the car twice, however after this the battery was dead again. Due to this I'm pretty certain the alternator is working correctly.

    Thanks for your help

    Hi Pat

Many thanks for your help - I have searched round and think I have now amended the rating.

If it's not, then let me know and I'll have another go at changing it.

    Thanks again

Have you recently replaced the battery?

  • dan lincoln May 25, 2014

TEST FOR PARASITIC DRAW. if you have to drive it, you can disconnect it but never while the engine is running. with it off, put a 12v test light in series with a cable disconnected. in series between the post and the clamp. if there is a heavy draw the light will be bright. now leave it lit and eliminate circuits till you find it.

  • dan lincoln May 25, 2014

if the charge stays up when you leave the car parked and battery disconnected this adds to the evidence that it is a circuit draining the batt.

  • dan lincoln May 25, 2014

you better find outr what code is stored making that flashing warning light too. get it tested or borrow the tester and get a book if necessary.

  • dan lincoln May 25, 2014

alternator testing when you havent the right equipment should consist of removal and bench testing at the part store

Bad Alternator.
After Starting or Jumping your vehicle: Remove the Negative Cable from the Battery.
If the Engine dies or runs really rough it is a bad Alternator.
The Battery Starts the Engine and runs nominal operations. The Alternator runs the Engine after it is Started by the Battery.
If the Engine does not die or runs really rough after removing the Negative Cable, then you have a malfunctioning Battery.

NO DONT DISCONNECT THE BATTERY WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. the pcm requires 12v all the time. circuit damage of expensive parts can result

I have a 1992 Cadillac devile 4.9 charging issues Help????

Deville 92 old. lots to find bad that old. !
here it is, ID #2 below
you were told wrong, the reg is inside the ALT, actual.
the internet lied again.; 1/2 the time, asking 8year kid same.

the top parts sellers online, shows, no REG outside, so strike 2 on reg outside.

learn to keep that old (how old is it?) battery charged fully until car runs perfectly. or it can take 1/2 to jump start it or worse. dead batteries do not start engines and overload the poor donor cars electrics, doing so.(jumped)

once battery is new, or charged or load tested in a real shop
start the engine, see if GEN/CHARGE lamp goes out.? on dash.
if not alt is bad. wow no fuse then, scary then. lots of car fires.
or use voltmeter idling, at bat terms. 13,to 15vdc good below ALt is dead

Car dead but battery good

Check your alternator, and your battery.

A battery, non running, should register slightly over 12 volts DC, when the engine is running, it should register slightly over 15. If it doesn't, then it is an issue with your alternator. If it does, and after boosting and running the car, you turn it off, come back after a few hours and its dead, then your battery is more than likely pooched.

96 infiniti g20 ABS light came on and car died

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only genuine items as non-genuine replacement are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units If you needed a bigger battery then the autozone salesperson should have sold you the correct battery first time round.( try getting a refund on the first battery) Jump starting an efi vehicle incorrectly will do serious damage to the control module requiring a new ecu unit. Check what is staying on when you switch off including interior lights/ boot light

Car will not start

this doesn't sound good at all. if you couldn't jump start it within a few minutes, you should have stopped right there. maybe you were jumpping the car wrong, from doing so, you may have fried the computer, that rounds your entire engine. try installing a new battery, if any codes were stored in the computer, clear them out. some times just removing the battery cables for a few minutes will do this . sometimes not. try to start the engine. donot jump start, see if will start on its own. if not, seek professional help, keep blaming goodyear until you get results !!!!!!

Audi A4-how do i know if my alternator is bad or

START engine and turn on head lights to main beam if engine stops and battery is flat then the Alternator isent putting out 13.5 volts or 12volts so then turn off lights and turn on inn and with a test light check power lead on Alternator if you have power to alt then you have either Reg or brush problem .
Take it off and get it tested and if slightly faulty then get a change over one and refit start and recheck your head lights as they should come bright when engine runs evan at idle .
ITS that easy
