P0171 & P0174 Error Codes

2004 GMC Yukon XL, 5.3L V8, FlexFuel. P0171 & P0174 Error Codes pulles last week. Cleaned the MAF, CEL went off and back on a couple times and now is on again. When engine cold, tends to stutter & RPM's drop under 500. Better after it warms up, but can even feel it occasionally when in gear but stopped at a light.

Not sure the fuel pressure, could test. Not using E85 at this time (if that is what you are asking).

Partially restricted fuel injectors will cause too lean condition. Good fuel injector cleaner. If not you have vacum leak for sure. Usually intake gasket.

I know this is an old post, but I found the solution for my 01' Yukon P0171 and P0174. I have changed all the vacuum line and the PCV, throtle body gasket, MAF, plugs wires, fuel pressure reg. All was changed and the codes always came back.

I finally noticed the purge valve on the manifold was constantly purging. I replaced the purge valve abnd code has not been back. It was $40.

For one thing, cleaning a MAF doesn't always work. Sometimes they just need to be replaced. Especially depending on what kind of cleaner you use on them, the cleaner can fry them. Also, both banks being lean and running worse when cold more points to a vacuum leak. Check around for any broken or loose vacuum hoses, and when the engine is cold and running poorly, you can use either carb cleaner or a propane wand to check for an intake leak. If the engine runs better for a couple seconds, you've found the leak.

P0171 and p0174 GMC YUKON XL 2004 5.3 1500

These codes let you know the engine is running to lean on gasoline . May be only a plugged fuel filter or weak fuel pump. A vacuum leak can cause this problem . The engine controller may need reprograming with new software. Dirty fuel injectors. Try adding fuel conditioner to the gas tank and changing fuel filter.

  • P0101 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Performance
  • P0171 - Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1

  • Would start with the mass air flow sensor the other two codes may have been triggered by the performance of the MAF sensor. Is the vehicle running poorly or have high or low idle?

One of the things to look for is a vacuum leak, especially around the throttle body area. Make sure the throttle body gasket is not rolled and is seated properly. also check the PVC hose for leaks.
