My ignition tumbler failed on 1990 cadillac eldorado i put my key in and i get nothing but freeplay can i bypass this temporarly until i can get a new ignition

I have personally done this and it does work. You will still need the key to turn the ignition switch but you have bypassed the "chip" reader in the lock.

Yup thats how it often happens. However check your linkage first make sure it didn't slip. Most likely it sounds like you blew your clutches in the trans.

This car key has the VATS security chip in it. These keys are at least 100 bucks. You can rip into the ignition part and start the car with the wires, but it wont work untill you bypass the SECURITY system. Here is a link about the security. They probably told you to turn the key forward to the RUN position and wait 10 minutes until the SECURITY light goes out on your dash. If your vehicle continues to do this, it is most likely caused by a defective ignition tumbler. It is having a hard time recognizing your key and will not allow the engine to start. If you can get it running again, I would recommend getting the ignition lock cylinder replaced.

your key may be worn there a small sensor on your key that the ignition senses. the ignition tumbler may be worn out to. try using your extra key. you may have to have ignition key and tumbler replaced and reprogrammed to your vehicle. hope this helps

sounds like your going to have to replace the ignition tumbler,that is if your key has the small chip in it mounted in rubber,if you would like to disable it for good you can just buy another cylinder with key and plug it into the harness under the dash that runns up to your current tumbler and just put the key in the on position in the new tumbler and just tuck the whole thing up under your dash and the car will think the key is in the ignition and disable the alarm and your normal key will just start the car as normal,hope this helps

i had the exact same thing happen to me. i still havent gotten it fixed or exactly pin pointed the problem but, when you put the key in an turn it one click until ou hear the fuel pump kick on, then grab the steering wheel at the top and pull it down towards your lap, as your holding it down, turn the ignition over and it should start everytime. did for me.

the only thing i can recomend without taking it to a dealer to get the computer flashed, is to disconect the battery for a little while and reconnect it reset the computer.

Try this put key in switch leave on 15 min. switch off then crank this should reset the security code.

I would suspect the ignition switch is failing and needs replacing.
