2001 Volkswagen Cabrio Logo

2001 vw cabrio takes forever to start when cold. When hot, is ok. Once started, it sputters seriously when throttle is pressed about ahlf. If gently feathered, car is driveable. When driving, feathered throttle addition is OK. Anything over that is met with hard bucking like it is not getting fuel. Is this a fuel pump or something else. I replaced the plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter. Help

Try smacking the gas tank before you start it. give it a few good hits with a rock or a hammer but don't break it. i had a nissan quest that had the fuel pump going bad and allowed the fuel lines inside the pump to freeze. if that helps then you have to replace your fuel pump

is the air intake clear , new filter nothing squashing the intake pipe, how long does it take for the glow plug light to go out once you've turned ignition on ?

My wife has a 2002 VW Cabrio with 90k it starts and runs fine when cold but Alabama summer and engine temp make it hard to start when hot help she ready to disown me

have the carbons in your starter replaced.
if this does not solve your problem, have the ignition timing of your car checked by a mechanic. hard starting when the engine is hot is a symptom of overly advanced ignition timing.

Replaced the battery in a 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio... and now it won't idle! Sometimes it won't even start. Do I need to take it to the dealership or can this be fixed easily?

Start by turning the key to on, then pressing and holding the gas pedal to the floor. This should relearn the ecm. If not, clean the throttle body with some carb cleaner and a rag, then repeat the relearn process.

2001 VW Cabrio engine sputters and kicks and feels like it loses so much power gong up a hill. Thanks for any help! Russell

Hi!!
Perform a tune up on the vehicle. If no improvement is noticed, check fuel pump pressure, Your VW is about due for a new fuel pump.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Mk1 vw golf cabrio: hot starting problem?

Probably the starter needs to be replaced. If it was the battery, you would have more problems cold than hot.

I had the exact problem with my wifes 99 Cabrio - parked for 9 months. Ended up having to have the shop reprogram the ECU - it then worked fine.
