The light should mean the ABS is not operational. The brakes could be shot, or one of the ABS systems is plugged requireing a fluid flush. Both are dangerous and should be addressed. Some manufactors recomend the brake system be flush every three years, as debris in the system can, in rare cases, cause the system to lock in the open or no brakes position. Check your pads and fluid level. a low level can mean a leak but more often than not the pads are severely wore out causing the caliper cylinder to be fully etended thereby dropping the master cylinder fluid level. If all this checks out, test the system. Find a safe place, run up to about 30 MPH then slam on the brakes keeping the pressure on the pedal very firm. If it's working the brakes will not lock up even with the most brutal pressure. You should feel a pulsating in the pedal. If the system works it may dislodge whatever was causeing the warnig light to go on. good luck.
Hi:
The first thing to determine on your car is if it is safe to drive: Check your brake fluid level in the reservoir, and make sure you don't detect any leakage around any wheel/ tire areas. Your ABS light can be scanned and tell you what tripped it. Most auto parts stores, such as auto zone, will do this for free. The most common cause is usually a bad or dirty wheel speed sensor, but have your car checked out to narrow down the problem.
