We are thinking of buying a 1999 3L 24v auto RXE espace, I have heard that some of the early auto boxs were very weak but the latter ones made by zf were a lot stronger, i need to know how to recognise a zf gearboxed espace. I have been to renault with the reg no but the engine type is blank! Any help would be gratly appreciated.

P.S. Someone has said that the old renault gearbox is dash mounted
But the zf is floor mounted is this true?
All renault automatic gearboxes are weak i find later boxes weaker than the older units the zf are no better, ive seen these fail at 25,000 miles and older boxes usually last for 60,000-80,000 miles but with such a powerfull engine i would suspect heavy where would occur especially if it has been used for towing or school runs where the box is working hardest changing up and down. ures will have the older gearbox. good luck remember 20 mpg tops lol...
