You need to pressure test the cooling system. Unless you had the heads magnafluxed or inspected very carefully, there could be minute cracks causing the problem.
This is the #1 problem with any engine where boiling takes place due to the expansion power that steam has the capability of producing.
The cylinder walls could also have cracks in them, there could also be a freeze plug that is leaking slightly, causing the engine to overheat as it can't build the proper pressure.
sometimes it's a better move to get a low mileage used motor, than to attempt to repair one that has high mileage and this type of suspected damage.

I have to tell you, I only wish I were there to check this out with you. As much as I hate this to occur, once cured, it's a good story. I'm just going to throw out a few things I would look at off of the top of my head.
Let's make sure the trans is working properly, brakes not binding or hanging.
In looking at the belts and pulleys as everything is rotating, are the ratio's corret. Main pulley 6", power steering 4", the PS should be turning faster, alternator even faster, if you get my point. I'm just looking now for unusual & abnormal signs, slipping belts frozen pulleys, bent shafts.
Is the exhaust restricted-this is a catalytic converter symptom
Bent exhaust pinching and restricting?
Any chance the timing is not properly set?

CHECK 2 SPEED SWITCH FOR RADIATOR FAN IS WORKING THERE WERE MANY RECALLS AND TSBS ON THIS.THE WATER PUMP ON THIS IS A REVERSE FLOW IT IS MARKED WITH AN ARROW.IF THE COOLANT IS OVERHEATING IT IS NOT GOING THROUGH THE RADIATOR AT THE RIGHT SPEED.iT HAS TO GET OVERHEATED FROM SITTING IN THE BLOCK TOO LONG.GOOD LUCK EFBIL

had the heads tested and shaved by a performance engineer, the system builds good pressure, will idle all day, no problems, take her for a drive and just goes to hell
.finally found the problem. no thanks to jeep australia.
the impellor in the water pump was to thick, so it jammed up against the back of the housing and stripped the shaft so no water going thru. complained to jeep and it had to be my fault ie. no warranty, used after market unit at a 1/4 of price, now working great. as much as i like my grand it has to go because if i can't get good service and advise from the dealerships its not worth keeping.

Was this problem from the stock water pump!?! I sure hope this isnt my problem! I replaced mine with a GMB water pump with a metal impeller and mine still overheats.
