Does the battery light work in the dash? Do you have 12 volts to the stator (often marked "S") wire at the alternator when the key is turned on? If no light system will not charge.
Change the ballist located on the fire wall....it is a white ceramic looking piece that is bolted to the firewall. let me know if this worked for you. [email protected]
I owned a travco l'esprit 1976 new it inside and out.
Regulator
The voltage regulators that are used with the alternators on these vehicles are transistorized and cannot be serviced. If the voltage regulator is not operating properly, it must be replaced.
where did you buy the new alternator? Are you sure the alternator is good? Have the alternator tested before you spend time/money on your other components. If your wires are damaged or corroded, that's another problem.
its probly not charging or you might want to test the battery might be bad also did you have the old altenator tested check for power to voltage regulator at the alt to see if there is power presnt otherwise it will never charge without that power wire hot with key on engine off.
In a 83 MUSTANG GT the correct answer is BOTH. As a 5.0L and a TURBO CHARGED 4 cyinder were offered.
1983 Mustang GT
Engine:
5.0L horsepower increased to 175 HP when 4V carb replaced 2V carb from 1982 (Holley 4180C series).
Exhaust system was revised (less restrictive).
4-speed SROD was only transmission available until early December 1982. In December, new 5-speed T5 became standard GT transmission (4-speed remained on option list).
Block and crank were revised to accomodate a 1-piece rear main seal in December 1982.
The new "Turbo GT" with a turbo charged 4 cylinder engine was available beginning late in the model year - 145 HP and featured the same suspension and other features of the V8 Mustang GT.
Double check your fusible links at the starter solonoid. If one of them is burned, the charging system will not work. I'm assuming the control box you're referring to is the voltage regulator. Trace the wiring between the regulator and the alternator as well. I've had to run new wiring between the two before especially on the early iron. I have a 68 Mustang myself and had the same issue before and decided to use a Chevy 1 wire alternator instead. Definitely a much more simple set up being that the regulator is built in. It looks stock and I was able to clean up excess wiring in the engine bay for a cleaner look. Let me know if you'd like step by step installation of the Chevy alternator. It's very simple. My email address is [email protected]. I've had problems in the past receiving emails so I may need yours so I can get you the information. Try this address as well [email protected]. I'm really big into the early Mustangs. Mine runs a 331 stroker with a 4400 converter/C-4 reverse pattern trans. with an 8in. rear, 4.11 gears. Goes 11.81 @ 114 on pump gas and I drive it all over the place. Never gets over 170 degrees on a really hot day either.
