Fuel gauge wraped around to full - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

Gas as in gasoline or gas as in LPG gas? If its petrol, the fuel sender may be out of adjustment. (Usually means a new sender) If its LPG, the fuel stations are set to automatically shut off at 80% full. The gas tank will never actually be full to the brim but the gauge should be showing full if the gas nozzle keeps shutting off. Have a look on the LPG tank itself, they have a little gauge on them which shows how full it is. I have 2 tanks on my car , when "full" or when the pump shuts down, the tank gauges show just under full but the gauge on the cars dash shows full (2005 BA Ford)

A constantly full fuel gauge is usually caused by a short circuit on the sensor wire. Check the wiring by isolating the wire as near as possible to the fuel gauge. Measure with an Ohm meter between the wire and earth, the reading should be more than 10 and less than about 200k. A short is indicated by a reading of around 0 Ohms, depending on the accuracy of your meter.
A second possibility is the sender unit in the fuel tank which could be faulty, and then finally, and only finally, the head gauge could be faulty.

if it worked for a short period of time after doing the pump/sending unit the check the connections going to the pump/sending unit they would have been moved around doing the pump

The fuel gauge needle isn't the problem the fuel gauge sending unit inside the gas tank is the cause of this problem, it is not sending a signal to the gauge
As far as how many miles you can go that would be around 300 mixed city and highway most likely.

AS IN GAUGES DO YOU MEAN SPEEDOMETER AND ODO MILEAGE? IF SO ITS PROBABLY THE SPEED SENSOR LOCATED TOWarDS THE BACK OF MOTOR NEAR THE TRANSMISION IT WILL BE WRAPED IN LIKE TIN FOIL TO KEEP THE HEAT AND MOISTURE IT HAS 3 WIRES GOING TO IT.YOU MIGHT HAVE TO REMOVE THE AIR BOX OUT OF THE WAY TO GET A BETTER VIEW.JUST REMEMBER ITS WRAPED IN LIKE TINFOIL

Your problem is the fuel gauge sending unit. It needs to be replaced. Another benefit of owning the durable festiva is the access panel under the back seat. You don't have to drop the tank to fix this problem.

seems like you have a bad connection to the fuel pump and its effecting the gauge because they must share the same ground cable,check wrie harness around the rear axle for damage

Depending on the severity of the problem, Sea Foam fuel additive can fix this (or at least lessen the crazy jumping around). It's available at NAPA. It worked on my Jimmy. However, in my case gauge started jumping around with less than 1/4 tank (worked fine when full).

replace the sending unit it will leave you stuck when not ready for it please carry small can of gas until replaced sending unit good luck
