06 Cadillac STS V8 car has codes P0174 and P0420.

• DTC P0171 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1
• DTC P0174 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2
.
The engine control module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open and Closed Loop. During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without oxygen sensor (O2S) input. During Closed Loop, the O2S inputs are added and used by the ECM to calculate short and long term fuel trim (FT) fuel delivery adjustments. If the O2S indicates a lean condition, FT values will be above 0 percent. If the O2S indicate a rich condition, FT values will be below 0 percent. Short term FT values change rapidly in response to the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage signals. Long term FT makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. If the ECM detects an excessively lean condition, DTC P0171 or P0174 sets.
Diagnostic Aids
• Excessive resistance in the fuel injector ignition 1 voltage circuit or the fuel injector control circuit may cause the following symptoms:
- Lean condition
- Misfire
- Rough idle
• The system will go lean if an injector is not suppling enough fuel.
• A lean condition could be present during high fuel demand.
• A malfunctioning MAF sensor can cause this DTC to set. Refer to DTC P0101 .
• Review the Failure Records with a scan. If an intermittent condition is suspected, refer to Intermittent Conditions .

DTC Descriptors
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTCs:
• DTC P0420 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1
• DTC P0430 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 2

This code could mean the catalytic converter on that bank has failed .

Can i use a store bought digital multimeter to determine if there is a possible short to signal circuit with a P2196 (Bank 1 Sensor 1) causing the rich stuck in my car?

My source says code 2196 means the signal coming from the O2 sensor is stuck on rich.
The sensor is supposed to switch back and forth from lean to rich to lean as the computer controls injector "on" time. If the sensor signal stays rich, in most cases there is a leaking injector, or the sensor is faulty. I doubt a short to anything would be involved.
The sensor generates a small ac voltage between zero and one volt. Less than 1/2 volt is lean and more than 1/2 volt is rich. There is a heater in the sensor that could short to the signal wire, but then you should have a code for the heater circuit too.
You can remove the sensor and check for excessive carbon buildup from a rich fuel mixture, or go ahead and replace it and see what happens. A repair shop would be able to check exhaust gas output to find out if its the sensor or a leaking injector.

P0172 fault code

It could be an emmissions problem. Sometimes even the gas cap being loose can cause a code. Make sure to tighten the cap when done refuelling...you should hear repetitive clicks when its tight. Other components related to code p0172 are o2 sensor(bank 1) and catalytic converters. Hope this helps!

How to fix ck.eng.light problem?

The code is saying you have a major leak in your tank test results. Once every drive cycle the car tries to run a test on the gas tank and the lines to make sure there are no leaks. When you have a major leak the first thing to look at is the gas cap, make sure it's on securely. If thats not the problem the next item that is most common for the code to be set is the Canister purge valve (AKA evap valve). The canister purge valve is attached to the drivers side upper part of the radiator. If you take out the black plastic hose that goes to the air box you will be able to see the valve much better. If you have a hand held vacuum pump you can test both connections on the valve to make sure it holds vacuum, usually it doesn't and replacing the valve will solve the problem. After that it could get hard, you might have to have the system smoke tested for leaks.

Won't pass smog, Rich idle.

First, is the check engine light on ?
You should have a code for the O2 sensor showing the exhaust gas is rich.
Could be a faulty injector, fuel pressure regulator, or O2 sensor.
Even a faulty thermostat would do it.

Fix engine light

Not likely.... But as you just put fuel injector in make sure your fuel cap is tight cause if its not the computer will detect a evaporation leak in the gas tank. So tighten the gas cap and drive the car for a few days & see if the engine light goes off .. If not get the computer scanner to see what's going on

Serv. Eng Light mystery

The evaporative emission system is designed to prevent fuel vapors from being released into the atmosphere. The vapors are absorbed and stored by a fuel vapor (evap) charcoal cannister until certain engine conditions are met, then the vapors are purged and burned in the combustion process. I would lean toward a faulty purge solenoid based on the condition that you describe. I would also look at a faulty gas cap. The gas cap is an integral part of the evap system and will cause these kind of problems if faulty and not venting properly. Hope this helps and that you find a resolution to your problem.
