My 1990 Cadillac Deville wont start or engage starter

My 1990 Cadillac Deville wont start, wont even turn the engine or engage the starter. The key is stuck in the ignition and wont turn to the off position so I actually removed and replaced the terminal wires to drive it on a few short. Now it wont start at all. Fuses are good. Jump starting didnt help. Battery seems charged.
I need to start it to get it home, then I need to get the key out and to work to turn off the car. Btw: Some time ago smoke came from the steering column but stopped. I later noticed the cornering lights and twilight sensor no longer worked.

Thanks Burke400 but the fuses were one of the first things we checked, all good including the one to the 'crank'. I think it has something to do with the complicated electronic anti-theft chip reader in the ignition switch. In the meantime we dragged it back home since that was even easier than hooking up a starter bypass in a cold dark parking lot late at night.
Guess the next thing to do is to tear down the steering column and start inspecting electronic components inside and release the key cylinder.

Sounds like you blew fuse. Fix fuse and borrow a car starting switch they use at car repair shops. As long as you can turn tumbler to on ,you can start using the starting switch from repair shop..There should be a way to run a start button to start car and your off/on key should be OK

I just replced my starter in a 1994 Cadillac deville and we think it may be the security or theft system for the car. And, now the car will not start. And the dash says to "wait 3 minutes" and try again...

OK. Make sure that the black and silver resistor on the key is clean of grease or moisture that can cause the security system to reject the key as a valid one coded for this car.

If you replaced the starter, hopefully you disconnected the battery first, so that there would not be any jolts of electricity or shorts when turning the wrenches or turning the bolts with the socket and ratchet.

I have a 1990 Cadillac Deville and a 1997 Cadillac Deville which have a similar key. Yours is probably similar in look and function to mine.

Another thing to mention, is that if you hear a click or it tries to turn over but doesn't, your connections may not be as good as they should be at the starter coming from the battery.

Or, finally, the starter might be defective, even though it is newly rebuilt or built.

So, I hope this helps.

How to change a starter in a 1990 cadillac sedan deville?

First, I would determine it is bad. I have a 1990 Cadillac Sedan Deville, and sometimes it doesn't turn over. But, if I toggle the switch a few times or up to 5 times, it starts to turn over and the car starts.

I have the same problem with a 1997 Cadillac Deville.

If you are set on changing it, here is a picture and instructions on how to test:
prev.gif next.gif Starter TESTING Voltage Drop Test Fig. 1: Schematic of a voltage drop test 91052g10.jpg
NOTE: The battery must be in good condition and fully charged prior to performing this test.
  1. Disable the ignition system by unplugging the coil pack. Verify that the vehicle will not start.
  2. Connect a voltmeter between the positive terminal of the battery and the starter B+ circuit.
  3. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage on the meter.
  4. If voltage reads 0.5 volts or more, there is high resistance in the starter cables or the cable ground, repair as necessary. If the voltage reading is ok proceed to the next step.
  5. Connect a voltmeter between the positive terminal of the battery and the starter M circuit.
  6. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage on the meter.
  7. If voltage reads 0.5 volts or more, there is high resistance in the starter. Repair or replace the starter as necessary. NOTE: Many automotive parts stores have starter bench testers available for use by customers. A starter bench test is the most definitive way to determine the condition of your starter.
---
Remember to disconnect the battery and remove the wires from the starter at the hex nut.

Then, remove the 3 or so bolts that hold the starter on using an extension and ratchet if necessary.

Hope this helps.

Chevy malibu won't crank dashboard functions no theft system issue, turn to on position and makes no sound...could this be the starter?

Most definitely sounds like a starter. Try toggling the key to the start position several times a second until the starter operates. I do this to my 1997 Cadillac Deville occasionally as the weather changes without changing the starter (which probably should be done).

I also have a 1990 Cadillac Deville that does this occasionally.

Must be a GM thing.lol.

Power, but can not start

Try to quickly engage and disengage the starter motor by rotating the key all the way forward and back to ignition on only, and back again several times a second until the starter motor engages.

Sounds like the starter motor solenoid is sticking, maybe.

This happens on my 1997 Cadillac Deville sometimes on hot summer days or even in the winter.

I thought it was the security system, at first, but it is more likely a starter motor going bad.
