My 1990 Cadillac Deville wont start, wont even turn the engine or engage the starter. The key is stuck in the ignition and wont turn to the off position so I actually removed and replaced the terminal wires to drive it on a few short. Now it wont start at all. Fuses are good. Jump starting didnt help. Battery seems charged.
I need to start it to get it home, then I need to get the key out and to work to turn off the car. Btw: Some time ago smoke came from the steering column but stopped. I later noticed the cornering lights and twilight sensor no longer worked.
Hey there. my name is dwayne, and im contacting you for help on my 98 caddy deville. well three days ago. i got a alarm installed. and friday i was driving on da high way and it just turned off. and smoke started coming from my steering wheel. engines coolant temp. was only 200 no smoke was coming from engine. now car wont start at all.!! please help
Sounds like you blew fuse. Fix fuse and borrow a car starting switch they use at car repair shops. As long as you can turn tumbler to on ,you can start using the starting switch from repair shop..There should be a way to run a start button to start car and your off/on key should be OK

Thanks Burke400 but the fuses were one of the first things we checked, all good including the one to the 'crank'. I think it has something to do with the complicated electronic anti-theft chip reader in the ignition switch. In the meantime we dragged it back home since that was even easier than hooking up a starter bypass in a cold dark parking lot late at night.
Guess the next thing to do is to tear down the steering column and start inspecting electronic components inside and release the key cylinder.
