It could be done at home if you bought the proper tool to remove and replace the pully on the pump. They do give you some sort of a tool with the new pump but I find it really weak and they brake leaving you stuck. This is why I say"If you bought the proper tool".

Need steering pump hosed replaced 1998 chevy malibu 3100 engine

may want to remove the ignition coilpack for more access to the nut on the rack, thats the hardest part of the job, then remove the hose retainig clip on back of the alternater and remove the steering pump bolts thru the pulley to lift it up so youll have clearance, but the fuel injection check port usually gets in the way so try carefully prying

Replace power steering pulley on 200 chevy malibu

GM power steering pump pulleys are a pressed on type with an"interference" fit-the hole is .001" smaller than the shaft. You need a puller/installer tool.I bought one for about 30 bucks at NAPA,you might be able to rent one at an auto parts store. The tool clamps the pulley nose and has a screw to push the shaft out.(some Chrysler alternators use the same design).

How do i remove/replace power steering pulley on 99 malibu 3.1?

go to a local auto parts store, and see if you can rent or buy a pulley removal tool for power steering pump. you will also need a pulley instalation tool. for they are pressed on shaft. do not use a press to install pulley. the pulley should be installed so the face of the pulley, is flush with the end of pump shaft. good-day !

How do you fix the power steering of a 2006 chevy malibu, when drive the steering wheel locks up and its very hard to turn.

a few possibilities.
Low power steering fluid. check for correct amount on pump filler measureing guage.

Loose power steering belt. check to see if the belt slips over the power steering pulley while trying to turn the steering wheel. may need an assistant.

last, but most expensive. Rack and pinion steering bar is defective and needs replacing.

What are the risks of driving 2006 chevrolet malibu that has NO POWER STEERING....also what is cost of having this defect fixed. Thank You

The steering is extremely heavy if the power steering has failed and it is VERY DANGEROUS to attempt to drive the car in this condition. The car was not designed to be steered without the power assistance. You should not attempt it and the vehicle is NOT roadworthy. You will impair your insurance coverage if you knowingly drive the vehicle in this condition and expose yourself to criminal charges if you injure anyone.

The cost of repair depends entirely on the nature of the fault, the parts prices and labor rates charged at different workshops. If the problem is a result of a leaking/damaged power steering hose that needs replacing the costs will be moderate. If the power steering pump has failed and needs replacing it will be more expensive in labor and parts.

You need to find a competent mechanic familiar with Chevs and have the car towed to his premises for repair. The car needs to be put on a hoist to be properly inspected and repaired competently.

Alternatively you could try one of the mobile auto repair services if you have one operating in your area.
