Possibly an overdrive lock up sensor, or a shift solenoid,possibe valve body problem, You should probably take it to a trans shop for proper diagnosis. could be serious,but hopefully not. Good luck!

The overdrive light flasshings means there is a failure in the transmisson somewhere could be electric or mechanical, would need to have codes pulled to help anymore.
there is a fuse for overdrive, but im not sure its for the selector light, does the vehicle go in overdrive?? if so id say the fuse is fine and you need to replace the button.
Check the Fuse for the OD function, this is cab fuse panel fuse #29, 5A. If This fuse is blown, chances are the wires at the end of the shift lever are chaffed and causing the problem. This happens some times ( can't say why ), but it is simple enough to check and repair the wires if the insulation is chaffed.
If its just overdrive thats not working you can still drive your truck. It will use more gas because the engine is going to run faster, but shoud'nt hurt anything
Sounds like the passing gear cable is out of adjustment. Get a shop manual and see what the specs are on how to adjust it properly. It is a pretty simple fix.
