Does not have a dip stick.

Start the vehicle set park brake

In the side if the transmission oil pan a bigger bolt with a small bolt in the center.

Remove smaller center bolt trans fluid should drip out at a fairly constant rate if not its low.

Hope this tip helps.

Truck lost power and when you try to pass a car it slows down and chuggs

Stop trying to do what you are doing!!! Sounds like the transmission is slipping when attempting to downshift, and engine is over-revving!! Check the transmission fluid level and correct if needed. If fluid level is correct and fluid smells burned, suspect transmission has internal problem.

2005 f 250 feels like the transmission is slipping from 1st to 2nd gear. could the trans just need to be serviced?

Hello tat... begin by checking the tranny fluid level. Add fluid to fill it to just over the max full level.

Drive it for ten miles and see if that alone solved the problem. IF not, have it serviced and have the belts tightened. Joe

How do you know when you need to change your transmission fluid in my 2002 ford explorer

This is in the owners manual pages 269 and 270. TRANSMISSION FLUID
Checking automatic transmission fluid (if equipped)
The automatic transmission does not have a transmission fluid dipstick.
Refer to your scheduled maintenance guide for scheduled intervals for fluid checks and changes. Your transmission does not consume fluid. However, the fluid level should be checked if the transmission is not working properly, i.e., if the transmission slips or shifts slowly or if you notice some sign of fluid leakage.
Transmission fluid should be checked and, if required, fluid
should be added by a qualified technician.
Do not use supplemental transmission fluid additives, treatments or cleaning agents. The use of these materials may affect transmission operation and result in damage to internal transmission components. Checking and adding manual transmission fluid (if equipped)
1. Make sure the vehicle is on a level surface or level hoist.
2. Clean the filler plug or dirt and debris.
3. Remove the filler plug and inspect the fluid level.
4. Fluid level should be at bottom of the opening.
5. Add enough fluid through the filler opening so that the fluid level is at the bottom of the opening.
6. Install and tighten the fill plug securely.
Use only fluid that meets Ford specifications. Refer to the Lubricant Specifications in this chapter.

Narrowing it down.

The torque converter slips more than normal only if the oil level is really low - check that. Otherwise the problem is clearly with the pressure plates - and those can be replaced, you don't need to replace the entire tranny for that.

My Ford Explorer 2002 transmission is starting to slip, especailly when it is cold. I checked with local Lube & Go business and they check the transmission oil level. It was good, but probably needs...

Actually, it would be impossible to change the fluid in a 2002 Ford Explorer transmission because it is a sealed "maintenance-free" unit. Ford claimed that this transmission should operate problem free for 150,000 miles, but as we know, this is not the case. Since the transmission cannot be flushed, premature wear occurs due to degradation of the fluid. This is just one of the MANY design mistakes made by Ford engineers during the end of the "disposable car" era. My best advice to you would be to sell the vehicle before you end up spending a fortune on repairs, and if you really love the Explorer, buy one that was built after 2005.
