Tach jumps around when stepping on gas with little exceleration

just an idea it may be related to your throttle position sensor.

probably lean fuel mixture due to sticky egr valve, or intake leak. (vaccum) common on 4.3. possible fuel pump or plugged fuel filter.

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve may be stopped up with carbons. This would account for some loss of power as well as odor if leaking around intake. If I remember correctly, egr tube originates just above catalytic converter on this model. Condition may be early signs of cat failure ( commonly accompanied by "rotten egg" odor). I recommend having emission system checked by certified tech to avoid uneccessary component replacement.

If the EGR valve is suspect, you should have a vac leak.
If it has been running rough since you first started it, I would suspect the injectors and fuel filter.
Did you pump the bad gas out of the tank ?

it means its time to replace the EGR (exhaust gas recirc) valve it will be located on your intake manifold.

V6 or V8?
How many new coils and why?
Hoses have no bearing on drivability issues.
Any vacuum leaks?
Converter partially blocked?
Mil Light on dash and if so what codes are present?
Any codes previously,last year or two.
Shifting okey and tach doesn't flair or hang on shifts?
Clean Air Filter and Gas Filter?
Disconnect EGR Valve,plug hoses and test.

kinda sounds like fuel pump or egr valve you cuold disconnect the egr valve and retest if problem goes away replace the valve.white smoke tells me egr hope this helps TUNDERBOLTZ

Get a free code at AutoZone or some other place. It could be one of the many sensor problems. Especially the idler sensor or Map, Maf, and on from there.

Check EGR valve and sensor it might be carbon up or stuck and the sensor might be bad.
EGR valve and sensor connected to it control idle at start up.

the problem is most likely the EGR Valve. to test this disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR Valve and block it with a screw or golf tee, if the hesitation goes away replace the EGR Valve.
