SOURCE: power steering leak

To try to find the leak, purchase a spray can of engine cleaner and spray the entire area of the pump and hoses. Then wash off with a garden hose. Fill pump reservoir with fluid. Have someone turn the steering wheel while you look in that area of the pump and hoses with a flashlight for the leak. Be careful of rotating fan and belts!

SOURCE: power steering pump leaking

Dear bigwood_84, Sat 02-21-2009 12:46pm EST (USA)

Try a can of "Bars' Leak" for power steering leaks 1st available at your local auto parts store. It's cheap and can't hurt but may fix your problem!

Advanced Auto Parts has a tool lending policy and a lot of good advice!

SOURCE: loud squealing from power steering pump - do I need new PS pump?

Hi Norman,

Sounds like the adjustment may not be correct on the power steering belt, with the tension not being enough, after you replaced the belt ?

Try giving it a little more tension, and go from there.

Hope I have been of help.

Good Luck !

John.

SOURCE: I have a 2003 Ford

It might be the rack and pinion kit (seals)

I had this problem 2 months ago... replaced the powersteering pump 3 times until I convinced the mechanics to look at the rack and pinion. there they found the leak, especially when I turned the wheel.. They first kept telling me there was air in the lines and it would go away. but that never happened.

Power steering leak

with power-steering it could be one of three problems. 1- power steering pump could be going out ( normally with the pump the car will whine but will not normally leak and still hold fluid) 2- a leak in your power steering lines ( and can normally be resolved with new lines or sometimes you may be able to bypass and clamp the leak on the line) 3- you may have busted the O rings in your powersteering pump and that will actually cause the pump to leak

hint- alot of people will tell you that you may also use transmission fluid for power-steering this is true you can its that same thing as power-steering fluid just a different color (but dont put power-steering fluid in a transmission, but at the same time if you plan on replacing the pump i would use transmission fluid due to it being cheaper but it will cause the O rings in the power-steering pump to go out quicker to cause a worse leak) so i would recommend to locate the leak first before using trans fluid due to if its in a line you wont have to replace the pump but if its already the pump this is the cheapest fix until repaired

Power steering fluid leak, 1992 dodge stealth

If the line from the power steering pump to the rack and pinion is leaking, replace it.

If the rack and pinion is leaking replace it.

If the power steering pump itself is leaking, then replace it.

Which section is leaking?

Power stearing leak

All depends what is leaking. For power steering leaks there is not much to do but replace the leaking part. If it is a hose it is not a big deal. If it is the power steering pump itself check autozone, etc for availability. They'll probably have to order it in for you. Sometimes you luck out and the leak is due to a seal where a hose is screwed into the pump or the rack and pinion unit. I believe some auto parts places carry stop leak for power steering units but I have no experience with them. One last thought is if the car is pretty old and the leak a slow one, you just check your power steering fluid periodically because you can buy a whole lot of power steering fluid for the price you'll pay for a power steering pump. You can also consider a replacement from a junk yard. Generally power steering pumps out last the cars they are put in.

My 2006 chevy impala has a massive power steering fluid leak, so my power steering goes out. This problem is solved when there is fluid in the system. Do i need to replace the entire power steering pump?...

you just need to check your steering pipes and hoses for any leaks. just replace them if a leak is found. if your reservoir itself has a leak, then your only best bet is to replace the whole ting ..

Power steering dont work to left or right

To find out witch it is,pump or rack and pinion, break loose the presure line on the power steering pump with a wench.Start the car and turn the steering wheel back and forth, you may need to loosen the nut on the power steering hose two or three turns to get the fluid to shoot out.It should come out pretty forceful. If it doesn`t,then replace the pump.If it does come out really powerful, replace the rack and pinion.

I have a power stearing leak I think its comming from driver side

The front pump seal on the power steering pump - located behind the power steering pump pully tends to leak on these. To fix it you are better off replacing the entire pump assembly because the drive shaft tends to wear crooked and messes up the seal. Also, these are known for oil cooler lines leaking which is directly below power steering pump which can be mistaken for power steering pump leak.
