How to switch 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee

that is because you have Part time 4wd? (what do you have)?
and must not drive on pavement free of ice.
its now winding up the drive train, bad for it too.

drive, to dirt, sand, gavel or grass and shift out of 4wd.
or jack up 1 tire, and same,
one tire must be on slippery surface. at least.

http://www.rubicon-trail.com/4WD101/driveline-bind.html

this happens on all PT 4wd
or using LOCK on AWD. dont.

First I would check with a different dealership. you will be required to provide only the VIN and probably some verification that you own the car, but the dealership can make a key and program it without the car even being there. I hope this helps.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee (63,000 mi - V8) Check engine light indicates #1 cylinder misfiring. Spent $$ getting system flushed for carbon residue. Drove 3 weeks, started up, ran rough, and light came on...

The miss, does not just come and go,if it is a engine valve, replace the coil and boot,go from there,if this does not solve the problem, then the injector is gone out,or going out.If it is a engine valve, the miss would never get better, then worse,it would be the same all the time, get him to run a air compression test, get the valves up(close)and see if any air is detected threw the exhaust,or the intake,it will be present if the valve is the problem.

Overheating issue

You need to get a pressure check on the cooling system. I suspect a bad head gasket. Engine compression leaking into a water passage would force coolant back out of the engine. Hope this helps.

Jeep starts,clatters, then dies

If you had a blown head gasket you should have water/coolant all over or in your oil. Check your throttle positioning sensor according to specs in your haynes manual. My 02 jeep grand cherokee was chattering while I was driving and ended up dying on the highway and I coasted into this town and luckly an auto parts store was right there. I tested it and it cost me 70 dollars.

Broken front coil spring

There were a lot of differences between a 98 TJ (Wrangler) and a 95 ZJ (Grand Cherokee). The grand cherokee is much heavier. Now might be the time for those "Off Road" upgrades you've been waiting on. And it is a good excuse.
Have a nice day!
