This will sound crazy but it has solved the problem more times than you would believe: give the dash board a and area around it a good wack with your fist. Often the connection to the light is what starts to fail not the bulb.
It could be a bad fuse. The clock on my dash went out on mine, and the problem turned out to be a fuse. It was draining the battery when I let the car sit for a couple weeks while I was traveling. Lexus at first claimed it was a bad battery (which was virtually new), but eventually found the bad fuse.
