I have white smoke coming from the tail pipe of my 1996 Cadillac DeVille. Not a blown head gasket, no water in the oil. Could it be my pistons or just needing new seal. Am I burning oil or have an oil leak somewhere? Only smokes after car has heated up but only when accelerating. More from right pipe than left with small amounts of water. Everything else works just fine. Please help I need the car for a little while longer.

Hi... it all depends on the colour of the smoke... usualy blueish smoke will mean it is oil burning and your piston rings may be getting worn if it is black then it might be running too rich etc.. a little bit of water is fine infact usualy it is a good sign that your engine is not running rich or lean so it is pointing towards oil seals... also if it was running rich it would probably do it more when it was cold

Testimonial: "Thanx lukewooly. The digital does does say check oil level now that I think about it.Very helpful. Don't wanna spend more than the car is worth."

hi it is pointing towards oil seals...

if the smoke was black and it was worse when cold then it would have to do with running rich but, because there is a little bit of water (this is a good thing) this means that the engine is running close to stoich (not rich or lean) and it would usualy clear up when the engine is warm because the extra heat helps burn the excess fuel..

so i am suggesting oil seals although if the smoke is more to one pipe then maybe you should first check the condition of catalytic converters and muflers etc.. aswell

if you are also useing oil then its another symptom of piston rings

I have a 98 Volkswagen jetta and white smoke started coming from the exhaust, not sure if put in too much oil,or if its something more serious, like broken gaskets.need advice!

Hello there,
It seems that you may face a problem with your car. Types of
smokes coming out of tail pipe are as follows:
WHITE - Water coolant leaking into engine or Cracked
Cylinder head.
BLUE - Oil leaking in to combustion chambers that is an
Engine problem. Piston Ring faulty
BLACK - Engine is flooded with Gas. Clogged Air Filter
GREY - Trouble in Transmission Fluid. Faulty Vacuum
Modulator.

Why is white smoke coming out the back of 99 deville engine

White smoke is an indication of the engine burning coolant. Possible blown head gasket or cracked head. Check your coolant level, and check your oil for any coolant in it.
I hope this helps.

I think my car blew its head gasket, but theirs no water in oil,if idling temperature stay normal, fans do come on when idling for long.I`ve changed spark plugs, plug wires, thermostat and heat sensor unit.As...

white smoke from the exhaust and overheating would almost certainly mean a blown head gasket.
the head gasket has gone between a cylinder and a cooling channel so exhaust gasses can get in to the cooling system resulting in the boiling and water from the cooling system is getting into the cylinder resulting in the white smoke (actually steam) from the exhaust.
the exhaust manifold is a separate issue that can be replaced when the head gasket is repaired.

My Toyota Corolla XL 1996 model is belching heavy white smoke. I have just changed the oil and also the spark plug. What do you think is the problem?

white smoke usually indicates the engine is burning oil or its burning coolant. when the engine is cold remove the radiator cap and start the vehicle, if it immediately begins to blow air and or coolant from the radiator you most likely have a blown head gasket, if not then remove the oil cap and feel for air coming out. if it blows kinda like a hair dryer then you most likely have a piston ring issue and you are burning oil. either way you may be looking at major surgery to repair.

Smoke keeps coming out the tail pipe bad...what should i do to fix it?

you likely have a head gasket issue or cylinder issue. Neither of these is remotely cheap to fix. if the smoke is gray probably burning oil, if the smoke is white probably getting water in the oil from failed head gasket.

Leaking oil put of tail pipe, is the cooling sensor important, head gasket blown how do you know

Never seen oil come from tail pipe (unless a piston has a broken ring or a hole burned in it.) Cooling sensor tells the computer the engine temp and the computer turns the fan on through the fan relay. Very important for it to work. A blown head gasket will make the engine overheat, can cause white smoke from tailpipe, coolant loss and extremely rough running. Also can cause coolant in engine oil or oil in radiator. What you may be seeing may be water mixed with carbon from the inside of the pipe. Excessive water coming form pipe is also a head gasket symptom. A compression test or cylinder leakdown test or a radiator hydrocarbon test will tell you if gasket has failed.
