Hi:
Yes, this engine isn an interference engine, and your valves will get ruined if your timing belt breaks. It is money well spent to replace it , and don't forget to have the water pump and tensioner replaced at the same time!

1994 honda civic, had a broken timing belt that was replaced by a mechanic and the car is not the same since then, it is very lazy struggling to drive since that time.

i'll bet the mechanic did not line the timing marks up correctly.....so cam and crank are not in sync.... i,ll almost guarantee it...

Timing belt

forget what the makers say re belt change GET IT DONE EVERY 60K (you will soon find out if its an interferance engine when it snaps) just so you know, its not the belt that causes the problem but the tensioner being too tight when fitted.....(by a trainee)

My timing belt finally went out and was wondering if i did any damage to my engine

normally when this happens the damage will mainly be bent valves wich will cause car to loose compression and not start unless you do head job.only way to know is try and do compression test after timming belt is done but then you will have to take timming off again i would take head off when changing timming belt..

My Toyota Corolla has about 130 K showing, all original belts, the serpentine looks fine with no sign of checking on the under side. The timing belt,?? How many miles will they last, and does this engine...

Your 2003 corolla has a timming chain with no maintenance interval.
It is a good idea to replace your serpentene belt if it has not been replaced. Your motor is an interferance motor.

Timing belt broke. Is this an interferance engine?

your in luck this is a freewheeling engine and should have no engine trouble after the new belt goes on.looking at the belt side the cam pulley marks line up at the bottom towards the right and the crank towards up to the right just look for the marks on the pulleys and block.Good luck let me know how it went.

Does a broken timing belt permanently damage a Mercury Tracer

depends on the Engine in the car.

1.9L SOHC (SEFI on Valve Cover)engine, no, they are non-interferance engines, put a new timing belt on it and go.

1.8 DOHC engine, yes, it will destroy the valves, head, pistons, and if really bad, the block too. These engines are interferance engines, where the valves just barely miss the piston as it comes up, and when the belt breaks it will hit the valves and destroy the engine.

Motor was running smooth new cambelt service ect, adjusted timming because could hear pinning on accelaration switched car off for one hour, while looking for an electrical fault on aircon turned aircon...

if you turned the motor backwards and then tried to start belt could have jumped this is a interferance motor which means the valves overlap the pistons ! you could have bent the valves.take it back to the person who did your timing belt
