Bmw 318i e46 overheating. took head off an had pressure tested. fitted new thermostat an water pump.Temp gauge stays in the middle. After 4 mile top hose very hot and bottom cold, I took the thermostat out and it runs for about 10 mile before overheating at the top hose and at this stage the bottom hose is a little warmer. the car only has 51 thousand on the engine as I have it from new I know this is correct. i also notice the fan does not come on
it may be that the radiator is partialy blocked or has an air-lock, does the radiator feel hot all over the core when over heating? / is all the air out of the system? bleed screw next to filler on radit may be that the radiator is partialy blocked or has an air-lock, does the radiator feel hot all over the core when over heating? / is all the air out of the system? bleed screw next to filler on rad

when the car over heats the top radiator hose is hot and the bottom one is still cold . I changed the thermostat bu didnt help it appears that the colant is getting thru the engine is there any other sensors that wud be causing this ?when the car over heats the top radiator hose is hot and the bottom one is still cold . Could be a few things - thermostat stuck shut?
Hole in radiator? cap not sealing? Blockage in block/hoses?
Water pump? faulty water temp gauge? check pressure of system by doing a pressure test and check for any leakage
Could be many things, but fuel pressure regulator, leaking injectors are most likely. DO NOT DRIVE UNTIL FIXED. If the fuel is really getting into the oil pan, oil will be diluted and could damage engine bearings.
To verify if cooling system damage exists. Drain the engine coolant. Remove the intake manifold. Remove the plastic heater core feed pipe.(located under the intake manifold). If the coolant pipe cannot be removed after removing securing hardware, the VANOS banjo bolt must also be removed thus allowing additional clearance needed to remove the pipe. Visually inspect the front (inside) of the coolant pipe. If the plastic on the inside of the coolant pipe shows no signs of deterioration (smooth surface) the engine should be reassembled using new gaskets and O rings where necessary. If the plastic on the inside of the coolant pipe shows signs of deteriorated (worn away, bubbling, ect) this is an indication that the engine has been severely overheated and these components must be replaced.....Cylinder head gasket, all coolant hoses, all plastic coolant pipes, coolant expansion tank and cap, radiator, water pump, thermostat, oil and filter....
Best test,,NAPA sells a combustion leak tester(balkamp #700-1006) A tube of liquid that will change color if combustion gas is in the cooling system.Thinking you may be right about a head gasket problem or possibly a crack in the head.
It comes with instructions and is cheaper than having a shop guess at the trouble.
The car's engine is overheating !
Its not because you forgot to fit in the thermostat there could be other problem, like tht of the water pump, radiator clogged up, cooling fan.
You have to check them all.
Was there any problems before you pulle out tht cylinder head?
you might have a blown head casket try due a pressure test on each cylinder and sometimes you can take a spark plug out 1 by 1 and just tap the ket so it cranks and see if water comes out of the cylinder
You actually need the thermostat in to pressurize your cooling system or the coolant won't cyle through the radiator, it'll just cycle around the engine. Most people think without the thermostat in the coolant will just pump freely through the engine and radiator, but it doesn't.
Chuck in a new thermostat, purge the air out of the system and see if it overheats then. I gaurentee it won't, if it does then you've got head problems (but they should already be obvious by now).
