1998 Corolla does not have a timing belt. It has a timing chain. It does not need to be replaced, unless it is broken.

Relax, there's still plenty of time. You could go 6 years and 70000 miles with only a slightly greater chance of failure, there's plenty of over-engineering. But, if you're still under warranty and want to keep it, then change it at 59999.

No.....you do not have to change the timing chain due to being parked....it is wise though to follow manufactuers specs on WHEN to change it.

There is nothing wrong with your timing chain.

1998-2008 Corolla has a timing chain. So, your 2001 Corolla does not require a timing belt change, since it does not have one. There is no prescribed replacement interval for a timing chain. your chain will run over 200000 miles or longer.

Until 2002 Toyota's had a timing belt. After 2002, Toyota's have a timing chain. Manufacturer/dealers recommend replacement of the timing chain at about 90,000 miles. I've talked to several mechanics - including the dealer - about the cost of changing out the chain. The lowest price I found from a very reputable mechanic is $260-270. He told me that if I brought in the part, he'd reduce the cost. The dealership was almost double!

Re: water pump: I haven't found anything that stated it must be changed at 70K miles. Hope this was helpful.
