4G64 engine light is on - computer output code. Is it possible to check the engine computer for a fault code using a multi meter? Where do you plug the meter into and what do the codes refer to?

Use a code reader to find out why the engine light is on. Make sure the vacuum lines are all connected. Are the spark plug wires on the correct cylinders?

bank 1 is driver side cat sensor. if one sensor goes it can get false readings on others. it could just be a seal on one of the connectors, but to find the faulty sensor is seals are fine. you need to find out the resistance on the sencore the live the negative and the signal wire are and use a meter with the engine running connect the meter to the wires with paper clips in the back of the plug with it connected it needs to be on the signal and the negative, the resistance should go up and down in resistance with engine output rev engine slowly if it moves smooth then its fine, if its not then its that sensor at fault. you can do this if you have a code reader and remove sensors one at a time till you only get one code left then the one you removed is the sensor at fault.

When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.

Yes, the computer does retain fault codes. They can be retrived either with a scan tool or by using an analog volt meter. (Good luck finding one of those if you don't already own one.)
Volt meter method:
Find the diagnostic connector located next to the fuse lock under the left side of the dash
Connect the positive lead of the volt meter to pin 1 on the diagnostic connector.
Connect the negative lead to pin 12. Turn the ignition switch on and disclosure of the ECM memory will begin.
The ECM will output 12 volt pulses. There are long pulses and short pulses. The long pulses count as tens and the short pulses count as ones. Example: 3 long pulses and 2 short pulses means code 32.
If there are 2 or more fault codes in memory, they will be output one at a time in order of the code number from lowest to highest.
