Your turbo sounds like its a bit on the sick side to me it should kick in at 1800---2000rpm so your thrashing the engine till it gets to 2500rpm time it was looked at

Is it an auto it sounds like the kick down switch usnt working there normally behind yhe accelerator pedal i think never had an auto merc been all manual
The gauge is working fine, the turbo will not kick in untill the engine is spinning fast enough, as the turbo is propelled by exaughst from the engine. So, you can drive around normal and never use the turbo, and climb in the gas and spool the turbo up, what you are noticing is called turbo lag, which is the biggest down fall when compaired to superchargers!
I don't wish to worry you but I think the turbo kicks in at around 2500rpm and it sounds like it isn't doing so, hence the management light coming on. It could be that failing. Be careful here, apparently the turbo uses the engine oil to maintain its operating temperature and if the turbo seals fail in anyway it eats the engine oil, with the resulting total failure of the power unit. So if you do nothing else, keep an eye on the engine oil level. (You may also notice oil smoke out the exhaust as well).
Unfortunately it looks like a trip to the dealer for them to check what the engine management is saying.
Hi, This is the second Vw I have responded to in a fortnight. Your lack of power I presume always happens when the glow plug light illuminates? This is because it is causing over combustion to vaporised diesel, I would be looking in the Glow plug timer and relay, as for Turbo lag, I run a E34 6 cyl Bmw Diesel and the Turbo only kicks in around 2,500ish so maybe yours is a little tired or in need of a check up? Does it smoke? Could possibly be sticking EGR valve. Remove and clean, or blank off and try running without it. If it runs better, this is your problem.
