hi,
if i can offer another solution,
do you have air conditioning in the car?
was it on while this problem is going on?
a/c has this idling riser to compensate for the load of the compressor.
maybe this is the fault. as the compressor kicks in, normal rpm appears, as the compressor kicks out, and the idling riser did not go down , then you will have a high rpm.
just a thought,

what year is vehicle please ?? as people often put it in wrong catagory ,if its mazada 2007 then its dealer only as a computer controls it all and the software is factory encrypted to stop general garages from repairing it .But check for a vacumn pipe loose under bonnet ,thin rubber pìpe from inlet manifold to gearbor or a diaphram switch,
sounds like a shift solenoid in the trans.

1. some mazdas had a PCM/TCM update to resolve 1st to 2nd shift shock. the only one who can update the is the dealer. maybe covered under 5 year 100,000kms powertrain warranty.
2, have you ever had the transmission fluid replaced? it could be dirty, burnt, etc.
if it was replaced, maybe it was replace with fluid other than M5 fluid. different fluids have different properties (thickness etc) which could cause serious problems if left.
I would recommend taking it to the dealer for the update and a transmission flush (not a drain and fill) using a flush machine.
