Have the cooling system pressure tested, that will tell you for sure if system is leaking. Have you changed thermostat? Might be sticking and making it run hot. Water pump front seal could be leaking, when pressure testing look to see if coolant is leaking around front water pump seal if not check elsewhere for leaks.

This is most likely the water pump if it is leaking at front of engine, the water pump is under the large timing belt cover and driven by the timing belt, so both are changed at the same time.

I have a 2000 Saturn L series and it keeps getting hot, mainly idling and going up hills. The fan seems to be working fine, it doesn't leak anywhere.

Te first obvious question is the coolant level full with no air in radiator, loose serpentine belt, is the cooling fan running, especially at idle . What are signs of a bad water pump?
Five Signs Your Water Pump Is Failing
  • Overheating. A dead or dying water pump cannot circulate coolant through your vehicle's engine and, as such, the engine will overheat. ...
  • Coolant Leaks. Coolant leaks from the water pump are common and a clear sign that it's time to replace the pump. ...
  • Corroded Water Pump. ...
  • Whining Noises.
I would look at a new water pump. the impellers are stamped steel and erode.

I am leaking coolant in the front not at the radiator but close too it. Is it the hose or the water pump?

Put a piece of cardboard under the car. Then look down at the cardboard from above the the area. You can see where the drops are in relation to the hose or water pump or other spot.
I do that for locating oil leaks.
Hope this helps.

If water pump fails, how would i know? the car is an 80td, 130k . fans never cut-in, temp gauge never gets above 60. T car also consumes coolant very slowly. I understand there are many possible causes of...

Typically, when a water pump fails, it fails because it is leaking. You will lose the coolant and your car will over heat. We must not be on the same measurement ... where I am, coolant temp of 60 is very cold. Keep an eye on it ... add water/antifreeze as necessary. Watch for leaking on the ground or on the motor.

I have 1994 firebird with a LT1 it keep running hot and over flowing

This could be a number of things:

How long has it been since belts, hoses and antifreeze have been changed? If more than 3- 4 years, start there and also replace the thermostat.

If the temp gauge climbs steadily and then drops down, replace the thermostat, taking into account the age of belts, hoses and antifreeze if they need to be changed out.

Consider whether the cooling system is full and if it has a 50/50 mix of coolant and water or more water than coolant. If the latter and all else has been maintained timely, drain and refill with the proper mix.

Do you have any leaks showing that might indicate that the water pump is bad. check the pump itself for signs of coolant coming out of the weep hole, which is a sign that the pump is going out.

Do the cooling fans come on when the car is hot? if not, you will need to repair.

If none of that , it could be the radiator has a plug somewhere.

Hi, leaking via weep hole indicates the water pump seal is bad....pump is shot. I would consider this an urgent fix. Any coolant leak is an urgent fix......MIke

Try to change out the CTS or coolant temperature sensor to see if that rectifies the gauge problem. If the engine doesn't seem to boilover or malfunction, it may very well be a false high heat indicator problem. in the electronic side of the coolant system.

Heat gauge shows hot , have to add antifreeze although no leak

Very common fault is head gaskets.  causing coolant consumption and bubbles in radiator.  Run vehicle, have a friend accelerate once or twice hard, while you smell exhaust for sweet smell of burning coolant.

Temperature gauage stays at 100 degrees but car seems to run ok

Is the needle going to the red part or the upper 3/4 part of the gauge?

If so you definately have an overheating problem. The car will run fine until it's too late.

Check the following:

1. Electric fans are coming on at temperature
2. Take off oil filler cap and check colour of oil. Creamy brown color indicates water getting into oil passages through head gasket or cracked oil passages in block.
3. Take off radiator cap when cold and check for coolant color as per step 2. Also check for coolant flow when keeping engine revs up. If not much flow (should be like a river flowing), could be blocked radiator.
4. At operating temperature hold top then bottom radiator hose with hand. If either of these 2 are still cool it indicates a faulty thermostat.

Otherwise water pump fins could be corroded.

Hope this helps :)
