Volkswagen transporter 1.9 diesel van r reg starts no problem but has no acceleration. When out of gear and press accelerater no response for about omne min then very slowly builds up revs can drive but need to go into higher gear than usual to get any speed if select lower gear slows down and need to change back up to slowly build up speed again. After couple hours clears and will run ok for days until not use it for few days and problem reappears have changed air and fuel filters. Recently changed glow plugs / starter hence good start could this be part of cause?

It seems like fuel pump gear is in wrong position. You need to remove drive belt and turn pump gear 360 degrees. Before you do that, you should know that there is 3 marks: first on flywheel, when 1 and 4 pistons is on top, second at the end of the camshaft and third in fuel pump gear (16 mm bolt). If you never do that before, I suggest you to go to mechanic, otherwise, you can do seriuos damage, like folded valves.

When putting van in gear the engine runs rough

how about putting the van in drive with one foot down hard on the brake and rev the engine, does it smooth out now? if it smooths out, i would pull the air cleaner tube to the throttle body and spray the throttle body with carb cleaner, be careful if using the red tube, I have had it blow off before into the intake, not good, open the accelerator and spray it out really good, it will to start until all the cleaner clears out.

Automatic shudders on some gear changes.

This car has both options of auto transmission plus manual gear **** so the only reason it can shudder when the clutch is not fully released and thus takes some time, that's when it shudders, but on accelerating this will not happen cos the centripetal clutch has enough torque such that the clutch is pressed hard to the cam & therefore no shuddering. On cruising speed the probability of clutch slipping making the car shudder. Thus changing the clutch assembly ought eliminate this problem....sodeep

The warmer the engine gets, the harder the truck is to shift!

replace the fluid in clutch resaviour ALL of it
ILL bet the fluid is dark and not clear you got moisture in the fluid

water expands much more than hydraulic fluid to hot temps
making less "room" for piston travel in clutch slave
