I have a 2001 volkswagen golf 2ltr auto. When the car is driving in second it feels like it drops out of gear. I makes a clunk noise and the car loses power for about 1 second then engages again. This problem happens about twice a day during normal driving, not everytime the ransmission changes into or out of second

Go to the vw dealer and tell the service advisor you want them to "reset basic settings on my transmission". i used to be a tech at a vw dealer and this fixes about 90% of all transmission shifting issues. they will charge you iether .5 or 1.0 hrs labor for this although it only takes about 5 minutes.

VW Golf 3 jumping out of gears

Sounds like a stripped reverse gear. And for the second gear probally need a new gear (1st 2nd) and the syncros with a new hub. If too much metal from the gears has already made it's way around in the bearings through the transmission oil you might be looking at a new transmission. The Golf 3 generation had many problems with reverse gears. Sorry to be the one to tell you.

Vw golf mk 4

Hello Steve!

Sounds like your control arm bushings are worn, which allows the control arm to move too much during loading and making this noise.

May also be a result of play in one of the shafts CV joints but is less likely.

If it's a CV joint then you should feel/hear something similar when accelerating in lower gears and lifting the throttle quickly...

Hope this helps!
