The belt is worn out,and something may have done this.Remove the belt .and turn all the pulleys, see if one of them is trying to lock up,or will not turn.If all the pulleys check out o k,then install a new belt, and start the vehicle, see if the problem is still there,if it is,the alternator maybe the problem, when loaded, the alternator maybe locking up.I think the belt is worn out,and streched out, and,or the tensioner is bad,but most likely the belt is worn out.

Hi Ron, that is a little of a mystery. Have you noticed any leakages from anywhere on the units? If the answer is no, has the system been bled correctly? If not, lets try that. Make sure that the steering fluid is at the correct level in the reservoir. Make sure the belt driving the pump is sufficiently tightened and not slipping. A slippage is usually identified by a loud screeching sound. If that is what is happening replace the belt and maybe the tensioner if it is automatic. If it has a tensioner, tighten it. With the engine at idle speed turn the steering wheel until it reaches its maximum lock to the left and hold it for four seconds and then turn it the opposite lock and do the same. (Holding longer will cause damage to the pump). Continue the bleeding operation observing and feeling for an improvement. Regards John

MY 2001 Elantra was making a horrible screeching noise whenever i turned the car on and whenever i turned the steering wheel. i thought it was the power steering pump so i replaced the pump but i didnt...

Hi, it sounds more like you have a improperly tensioned drive belt. If you didn't get all the trapped air out of the power steering system this maybe the cause of your stiffer steering problem now. Try loosening the P/S belt all the way and starting the car if you still hear the noise you know its in one of the other drive belts. good luck

Screeching noise

If your C/V joint is going bad it will make a nasty clicking sound and get louder the longer you leave it unattended. If this noise went away it could have been something stuck it the moving area of your wheel and just worked itself out.Keep an ear out for the noise to return,it it dosen't come back be happy.
