1995 ford F-250 diesel 4x4 automatic hubs won't engage.
Ford F-250 4x4 automatic hubs won't engage. What activates mechanism? What might the problem be? Transfer case is lever on the floor and works well. All the fuses are good.
A little more on the solution, please, besides just replacing the hubs. Is there a failed activator (electric or vacuum) that could be causing the hubs to not engage, or is their movement strictly mecanical? Can the hubs be removed and cleaned up then reinstalled with success. If the solution is to replace them is there an advantage to replacing them with strictly manual hubs.A little more on the solution, please, besides just replacing the hubs. ARE THE HUBS LOCKED IN FIRST? FOR YOU HAVE TO LOCK AND UNLOCK THOSE HUBS FROM THE OUTSIDE.. EACH TIME YOU GO INTO 4X4 AND WHEN YOU GO OUT OF 4X4 TO 2 WHEEL..DRIVE. OR YOU DON'T HAVE A FRONT DRIVE SHAFT GOING TO THE FRONT AXLE?? OR ITS BROKEN OR THE TRANSFER CASE IS BAD??
The hubs engage by vaccum, you probably have a leak somewhere, the problem is it doesn't have to be leaking at the modual, anywhere on the engine that there is a vaccum line can cause this problem. If this is a truck that you like and want to keep for a long time you should consider swithing over to manual hubs they never fail and you'll save a ton of gas when your running in two wheel drive.
It sounds like your front hubs are worn out. Actually just 1 of them. You can put in 4 high or low pull it forward chock it raise the frnt wheels to see which one isnt locking by turning it. Most people just go ahead and buy new set of manual Waren lockers.
First thing to do is engage the lock out hubs on the front axels if it has them, they should say "free" or "lock". Turn them to lock. Then inside the cab on the floor hump will be the 2H 4H N 2L slector. Pull the slector lever into 4H and you are in 4WD high range. Do not drive the truck in 4WD on dry pavement, only gravel/dirt or snow. The minor difference between the front and rear wheel speeds will "wrap up" the driveline and make it hard to pull the lever out of 4WD. It is recommended that you back the truck up at least 10 feet after you remove it from 4WD to "unwrap" the drivelines. Your choice as to disengaging the front hubs, but it will save wear and tear on the front axels and dirveshaft if you disengage.
I had the same thing happen. The automatic locking hubs are faulty, causing one or both hubs to try to engage or disengage onto the front driveshaft. This makes the clicking noise and loud clunking that you hear. You may notice your steering pulling to one side of the road, because one hub is locked in. Replace the automatic hubs with new ones, do not try to fix the old ones. I liked the
convience of automatic hubs but replaced mine with manual hubs, there just way more reliable.
Check the front wheel bearings for play and also while the wheel is off the ground lock the front hubs, grab the axle behind the wheel and see if it is engaged. If not then you will need to take the hub apart and find out what is broken.
i have 2006 f250 4x4 will not engage unless i lock in hubs. once hubs locked in i can engage 4x4 by using electronic selector. why will it not engage when hubs are in auto and electronic selector is on 4high
