I have a 2000 740 iL, I found that there was a recall for the brake light switch. It is under the dash just above the brake pedal. The switch is ratcheted for adjustment and wears out. A new switch is around 20 buck and takes about five minutes to change.
I had a similar problem on a 77 T-Bird. It plagued me for weeks off and on. It ended up being a loose ground wire by the right front signal light. (that was making the lt rear brake light not work). I also had a 85 nissan 300 ZX that had to have a turn signal switch replaced to make it's brake lights work. Are the signal lights and the brake lights the same bulbs? Do the signal lights work? Do the driving taillights work?
Stop light switch.Look under the dash and follow the brake arm up.You will see a little plunger that contacts the arm.More than likely it contacts the front of the arm.
SOURCE: both of the brake lights on my 97 bmw 740i don't work
are the dash lights still working,if so,first check the bulbs, you can get a test light at autozone for a couple bucks, with the bulb out, test light grounded, have someone step on the brake pedal, touch the test lite probe to one of the contacts inside bulb socket,if it dont work your brake lite switch is out,its located under the dash, maybe on brake pedal lever
