My 2003 Seat Leon 1.6SX developed erratic/dead speedo and erratic fuel guage (when below half full) at about same time.
I got the instrument cluster tested - no fault found.
I fitted a new speed sensor - no change.
I looked at the three electrical connections on the speed sensor.
The ground connection is good.
There is continuity from the 'signal' connection from sensor to the dashboard and it pulses as the transmission turns. Looks good.
I PRESUME the third connection is for +12V but I don't have a wiring diagram. At present that connection has zero volts and I suspect a break in the wiring.
Can anyone please tell me whether the third connection should have +12V when ignition is turned on? TIA.
The answer was a break in a wire in the wiring harness close to where the bunch of three wires from the speed sensor join the main harness under the battery tray. I peeled back the binding tape and there was a clean break! IMHO harness must have been stretched badly during loom manufacture and wire finally snapped. There is no mechanical strain on the wiring at this point. The broken wire was supposed to deliver +12V to the speed sensor. Repaired the break and speedo working again! It also fixed the auto volume on radio (i.e. volume is supposed to increase as road speed increases) which is understandable but it also fixed the erratic petrol gauge - which is quite weird.
No more speeding tickets now - although I did get quite good at calculating vehicle speed by using the rev counter!
Why did I attack the loom at this exact point? Because of a brilliant post by Partyboy at http://uk-mkivs.net/topic/69234-how-to-f... THANK YOU!

No but they do suffer with the float sticking in the sender unit and check the sender unit on top of the diff unit for the speedo
