That code represents a lower than expected reading for temperature (coolant). First thing to do is check your coolant level, as if it is low, then the sensor can not read correctly. Second, you may have a thermostat that is stuck open, allowing the coolant to cool off too much. The sensor should be mounted on top of the engine, near the thermostat housing.

Make sure you replaced the right one there are two sensor's for the coolant, one takes coolant temp and the other one runs the fans for the radiator. Both are located on drivers side of the block. 2 wire leads on each how ever both are different in sending readings to the computer. Both look just alike also. Just make sure you replaced the right one. Or replace both.

SOURCE: What can keep causing Check engine code P0128

P0128 Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature.)
Meaning the regulating temperature is higher than the themostat cooling temperature . you may have to replace the Coolant sensor again. or maybe both. Sorry !

P0128 is coolant operating temperature operating too low. This can be contributed to the Thermostat stuck open or faulty electronic radiator fan clutch. This is common, I had the same issue and replaced the thermostat and fan clutch and had the clutch re-programmed (required) at the dealer. As for the P0410, check the air pump fuse, if blown it will set this code on. Also check the air pump hoses for water and cracks. Hopefully this helps!!

Check engine light comes on at times and fans kick in to!

If this is the same car with the code 128 check the thermostat. You might want to look at the temp sensor and make sure its full of coolant too.

Engine light came on while driving on highway for 30 minutes

po128 cooling system preformance, this can be caused by a bad thermostat or fan relay, if the fans are staying on to long and last a bad coolant temp sensor, this car uses two coolant temp sensors, the best way would be with a scan tool to watch the sensor values and see if there are ok, this being a 2009 honda with 32,000 miles , this type of problem is not seen to often. check connections to sensors and make sure wiring is ok,

Service engine light comes on reset it it and takes a couple o days to come back on .truck doesnt overheat but comes up 128 error is it the thermostat or engine coolant sensor

It is possible that your oxygen sensor needs to be replaced.
have it checked out, thats the most common reason the engine light comes on.
P0128 error means thermostat stuck open, replace it.
then reset computer with scanner, lights and codes should go away.

Ck engine light come on had it ck show code 128

P0128 is a temperature error code indicating: ECT Sensor Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature

Possible causes are:

  1. Check the operation of the thermostat (it may be stuck open)
  2. Coolant level is too low, or the coolant mixture is incorrect
  3. ECT sensor signal circuit has a high resistance condition
  4. ECT sensor is damaged or it has failed
In most cases, assuming the coolant level is full, changing the thermostat will correct your problem.

My 2003 kia spectra comes up with P116 and P128 error messages. What do I need

p0116 is-- engine coolant tempurature ckt/range performance----- p0 128 is--coolant temp below thermostat regulating temperature. to fix these 2 codes are similar, change coolant tempurature sensor and thermotat all should be ok. make sure coolant in radiater is full. hope this helps you.

A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • Low engine coolant level
  • Leaking or stuck open thermostat
  • Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
  • Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  • Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor

Getting codes PO431, PO421, PO128

2003 saturn vue, we dont have the engine size, the codes should be and are the same, po 128 means; cooling temp is out of spec, make sure the coolant is full, then replace the coolant emp sensor and make sure the connection is good, i would also replace the thermostant, this is a common code on these and most of the time its the coolant temp sensor or thermostant, ive learned to replace then both to avoid future engine lights with code po128. next we will check the code # po421, this code is that the computer sees that the cat converters are taking to long to warm up, code po 431 is also the same as po421, this code is related to the thermostant and sensor, the sensor give the computer the wrong temp readings and then the compuetr thinks the engine is hotter than it is and thinks the converters should be also hot like the motor but the coolant temp is giving a false reading, if you replace the coolant temp sensor and the thermostant and fill coolant , then reset the light and you will solve the problem, i hope this is helpful, also the sensor is located to the right of the engine if you are standing in front of the motor, heres a picture of the sensor, remember to check connector heres a pic of the connector, good luck.johnjohn2_20.jpg
