1997 Ford Explorer AWD headlights do not work from dash switch
1997 Ford Explorer AWD headlights do not work. Checked all fuses, tried swapping out in-dash headlamp control switch and lights will still not go on from in-dash control. Both headlights work from the high/low beam-signal lights-passing lights control that is mounted on the steering column. Any suggestions.

Check the fuses first, then if they are ok you may have a defective headlight switch, they connectors can get burned and the switch contacts as well this can cause the loss of lights like you have. Replace the headlight switch and connector as one repair, do not crimp connect the repair connector on, solder and shrink tube the solder joints. To remove the headlight switch for inspection follow these directions. Remove two bolts under the radio and pull out that bezel
Remove four 9/32
bolts (or screws seenvehicles with bolts, some with phillips
screws, some hex screws) on the very bottom of the panel by your knees (two
hidden under the hood release
handle)
Remove two bolts right behind the top seam of that panel under
the steering wheel holding the
top panel to the dash (you should be able to pull the steel panel by your knees
down slightly to get to them, but you may need to remove or loosen yours,
depends on if someone has had it off before)
Remove the three bolts
holding the top cover inside the upper lip by the instrument cluster then you can remove the dash panel
holding the switch
you drive a ford truck and the most common problem with the lights are the multi function switch (turn singnal, high/low beam wipers) you can get one of theese from a local junk yard to save money this part at the dealer will run you about $150.00.
Have you checked both low beam bulbs? I have seen both burn out close together.Does this have tilt steering wheel? If it does, remove the plastic steering column cover.Check the wiring to the dimmer/turn switch. The connector ends would pull out of the hard shell connector, when using the tilt feature. The wire harness was mounted too tight, and didn't allow for the angle in tilt.
