Hi. my passenger seat belt on my 2001 ford taurus is stuck. It is pulled out but not all the way and it will not retract and it cannot be pulled out any more. please help. I need to use the car tomorrow to transport teenagers on a class trip and i need all seatbelts to work.

You can't it is not designed that way. The seatbelt mechanism is damaged and needs to be replaced.

of course it possible to access this retractor , you just need to locate the small round circles in the lower part of trim and gently pry the covers off , screws will be evedent , you will need a 6 mm star (five sided) drive socket wrench to remove the retractor though

I would say it is in the locking mechanism. Sometimes stuff can fall into the cover and block the locking mechanism. If you know how, take the cover off the retractor and see if anything has fallen in there. If this is not the problem, you may have a defective retractor. DO NOT try to dissassemble the retractor, it is like a jack in the box. The spring can and will jump out and you may be injured in some way. If you are not mechanically inclined, take it to a shop.

Try pulling on it really hard, and then slowly release. If that doesn't work, you can remove the plastic trim piece and see if something is jamming the mechanism, like a petrified cookie.
If you poke around a bit on the mechanism, you will eventually hit the release, and the belt will retract as long as the wind-up spring is not broken. If it is broken, you should replace the belt.

It sounds like the belt is twisted and has jammed the reel. You'll probably have to remove the trim that covers the reel and straighten it out.

open the seat belt and clean its spring and lubricate it.

this is a simple repair many dont know. remove or pull off plastic pillar post cover, seatbelt probably twisted inside. twist it back around so it runs flat and lube slightly with a light lube spray on metal gearing. i had the same problem w mine pk

remove trim covers & replace the Retracter Assembly.

you may have to remove the bolt that holds the buckle to the floor. Try to push the belt into the retractor and see if it frees up.

I assume you are saying it is in the locked mode. It has an automatic lock mode for holding a child seat. When the belt is pulled all the way out, it goes into locking mode. You will hear it ratchet when the belt starts going back in.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Safety Belt, Lap/Shoulder The dual locking mode retractor on the shoulder belt portion of the combination lap/shoulder safety belt for the front seat passenger and rear seat outboard passengers operates in two ways:

1. In the vehicle sensitive (emergency locking) mode, the shoulder belt retractor will allow the occupant freedom of movement, locking tight only on hard braking, hard cornering or impacts of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more. The front and rear outboard seat belt retractors can also be made to lock by pulling/jerking on the belt.
   

1. In the automatic locking mode, the shoulder belt retractor will be automatically locked and remain locked when the combination lap/shoulder safety belt is buckled and does not allow the occupant freedom of movement. This mode provides tight lap/shoulder belt fit on the occupant and on a child safety seat or infant carrier installation restraint.
   

1. When the combination lap/shoulder belt is unbuckled and allowed to retract completely, the retractor will switch to the vehicle sensitive (emergency) locking mode.
   

WARNING: REAR-FACING INFANT SEATS SHOULD NEVER BE PLACED IN THE FRONT SEATS.
